Trap Bar vs Barbell Deadlift for Home Lifters

Trap bar vs barbell deadlift is a common question for anyone setting up a garage gym, usually phrased as “do I need a hex bar if I already have a barbell?” The short answer: both are excellent hip-hinge lifts, but they load your body differently. In the research, lifters stand inside the hex bar, the load moves closer to the body’s center, demand shifts a little from the lower back and hips toward the knees, and most people move the bar faster and lift as much or more. The straight bar asks more of the hamstrings and lower back. Below is what the studies actually found, how each bar fits a home gym, and what we sell for each.

Trap bar vs barbell deadlift: the key differences

Trap (hex) bar deadlift Straight barbell deadlift
Where the load sits Beside you, in line with your body In front of your shins
Grip Neutral (palms facing in) Overhand, mixed or hook grip
Joint demand (Swinton et al. 2011) Lower peak moments at the lumbar spine, hip and ankle; higher at the knee Higher peak moments at the lumbar spine and hip
Muscle activity (Camara et al. 2016) More vastus lateralis (quad) More biceps femoris (hamstring) in the lift and more erector spinae on the way down
Speed and power Higher peak force, velocity and power in the studies below Lower than the hex bar at the same relative loads
Learning curve Usually easier to set up and learn More technique to keep the bar close and the back set
Other uses Shrugs, farmer’s carries, jumps Squats, presses, rows, Olympic lifts

What the research says about hex bar vs straight bar

Joint loading: Swinton et al. (2011)

Nineteen male powerlifters deadlifted with a straight bar and a hexagonal bar at 10% to 80% of their one-rep max. According to the study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, the hex bar produced lower peak moments at the lumbar spine, hip and ankle and a higher peak moment at the knee. The lifters also had a heavier one-rep max with the hex bar (265 kg vs 245 kg on average), and peak force, velocity and power were higher with the hex bar across the submaximal loads.

Muscle activity and power: Camara et al. (2016)

Twenty resistance-trained men tested both bars. In this study (PDF) one-rep maxes were essentially the same (181.4 kg straight vs 181.1 kg hex). The hex bar produced greater peak force, power and velocity and more vastus lateralis activity, while the straight bar produced more biceps femoris activity in the lifting phase and more erector spinae activity in the lowering phase. The authors concluded the hex bar may be more effective for developing maximal force, power and velocity, while the straight bar puts more emphasis on the hamstrings and lower back.

Other findings

A smaller study of 11 men (Lake et al., Sports, 2017, mdpi.com/2075-4663/5/4/82) found a 6% heavier one-rep max and 28% greater power output with the hex bar at 90% loads. A 2020 systematic review in PLOS ONE on deadlift muscle activity reported that the hex bar deadlift produces strong thigh muscle activity with reduced erector spinae activity, and called it an appropriate variant for athletes with lower back issues. It also noted that only 2 of the 19 studies it reviewed looked at the hex bar, so the evidence is still limited.

Two caveats: these studies used trained young men, and they measured single sessions, not long-term results. They tell you how the lifts differ, not that one bar builds a better body. If you have back pain or an injury, talk to your doctor or a physical therapist before choosing either lift.

Which is better for a home gym?

Choose the trap bar first if

  • You are new to deadlifting and want a lift that is easier to learn.
  • Your goal is general strength, athletic power or jumping, where the hex bar’s speed and power numbers are attractive.
  • You want a deadlift with less lower back emphasis (always with your clinician’s go-ahead if you have back issues).
  • You also want a tool for heavy shrugs and farmer’s carries.

Choose the straight barbell first if

  • You will only buy one bar. A barbell also handles squats, bench, overhead press, rows and cleans, which a trap bar cannot.
  • You compete or plan to compete in powerlifting, where the conventional or sumo deadlift is the contested lift.
  • You want more hamstring and lower back training from your deadlift.

For most garage gyms the sequence is barbell first, trap bar second. Our garage gym on a budget plan puts the barbell and plates in stage one, and the home gym buying guide explains what to add next.

Our trap bar listing does not publish the bar’s own weight, handle height or inside width. Those matter for planning loads and for fit if you have broad shoulders, so call us at 866-777-2590 (Mon to Fri, 9AM to 6PM PST) and we will confirm with the manufacturer before you order. For straight bar weights and sizes, see how much does an Olympic barbell weigh and our guide to men’s vs women’s Olympic barbells.

Plates, collars and storage for both bars

Both bars use standard Olympic plates. If you deadlift on a garage slab, bumper plates protect the floor and the bar. Our Phantom Elite Rubber Bumper Plates are 450 mm in diameter with recessed stainless collar inserts, sold in pairs or as 260 lb and 370 lb sets. Lock plates down with clamp barbell collars. A trap bar is awkward to store, so a dedicated spot helps; the Vertical Plate and Bar Combo holds six barbells and six plate posts in about 22 x 24 inches of floor. If you are starting from scratch, the Home Gym Starter Bundle pairs a 45 lb barbell with 260 lb of bumper plates. Browse more gear in our Tru Grit Fitness collection.

One space note: a deadlift does not need a rack, but you step inside a trap bar and plates stick out on both sides, so leave a clear area around it. Our garage gym space guide covers lifting platform sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the trap bar deadlift easier than a barbell deadlift?

Most people find it easier to learn because the load sits in line with the body and the grip is neutral. In Swinton et al., lifters also lifted more with the hex bar. In Camara et al., one-rep maxes were the same. “Easier” depends on the lifter.

Is a hex bar vs straight bar deadlift better for your back?

Studies found lower peak moments at the lumbar spine (Swinton) and less erector spinae activity (Camara, PLOS ONE review) with the hex bar. That is a mechanical difference, not a treatment. If you have back pain, get advice from your doctor or physical therapist before training either lift.

Does the trap bar work the hamstrings?

Yes, but less than the straight bar in the research; Camara et al. measured more biceps femoris activity with the straight bar and more quadriceps activity with the hex bar.

Can a trap bar replace a barbell?

Not in a home gym where you also want to squat, press and row. A trap bar is a great second bar, not a replacement.

How much does a trap bar weigh?

It varies by model. Our BRTR1000 listing does not state it, so call us to confirm before you calculate your loads.
