Wall Hung Toilet Guide: Pros, Cons and In-Wall Carriers

A wall hung toilet is a bowl bolted to a steel carrier frame hidden inside the wall, with the tank also concealed in that wall and a flush plate on the outside. You get a clear floor that is easy to clean, a bowl height you choose at installation, and a slimmer look. The trade-offs are a carrier to buy, a wall that must be opened and framed, and tank service through the flush plate. Below: how it works, stud depth, height, weight ratings and the models we carry.

How a wall hung toilet works

Geberit, a major in-wall carrier maker, describes a wall-hung toilet as a bowl installed on a carrier frame inside the wall, with the tank and plumbing connections behind the wall so only the bowl and flush plate show. There are three parts:

  • The in-wall tank carrier. A steel frame that sits between the studs, holds the concealed tank, and carries the weight of the bowl and the person using it.
  • The bowl. A ceramic bowl that bolts to the carrier through the finished wall. It has to be compatible with the carrier.
  • The actuator plate. The flush buttons on the wall. It also covers the valve service opening.

Wall hung toilet pros and cons

Pros

  • Floor cleaning. Nothing touches the floor, so you can mop straight under the bowl.
  • Adjustable height. The bowl height is set when the carrier is installed, so you can choose standard, comfort or a custom height.
  • A smaller footprint. The tank lives in the wall instead of the room.

Cons

  • Carrier cost. You pay for a carrier as well as a bowl. Our WOODBRIDGE carrier sold on its own is $899.00, so price the full system, not just the bowl.
  • The wall has to be opened. The carrier is framed in before drywall or tile, so this works best in a remodel or new build. Geberit’s 2×4 spec sheet says its carriers are not intended for outside walls.
  • Service through the actuator plate. The valves are reached by removing the flush plate. Anything not reachable there sits behind finished tile.
  • Load rating. The carrier must be rated for the load (see below).

In-wall tank carrier: 2×4 vs 2×6 wall for in-wall tank

Wall depth is the first thing to check. Geberit sells separate carriers for 2×4 and 2×6 framing. Its 2×4 carrier page links a spec sheet stating the system fits a minimum 3-1/2 inch framing wall or plumbing chase, with framing members 19-3/4 inches apart. The 2×6 version needs a minimum 5-1/2 inch wall. Both are listed for finished walls up to 3-1/2 inches thick.

The carriers we sell are all for 2×4 walls, according to their listings:

  • The WOODBRIDGE in-wall tank carrier (WHTA001) is designed for 2×4 stud framing. It lists stainless steel framing, a 500 lb rating, a removable chrome actuator plate and 0.8/1.6 GPF dual flush. The listing gives product dimensions of 19.5 x 4.375 x 44.9 inches but does not say which dimension is depth, so confirm the in-wall depth on the carrier’s spec sheet or installation manual before framing.
  • The Swiss Madison Pur bundles say their 2×4 carrier is meant for 4 inch studs, with adjustable legs.

For a 2×6 or deeper wall, ask before you order.

Wall hung toilet height

The carrier sets the height, so decide before the wall is closed. In its toilet height guide, Geberit puts standard toilets at about 14 to 15 inches from floor to rim, comfort height at about 16 to 17 inches, and says a toilet around 17 to 19 inches from floor to seat generally meets ADA height requirements in commercial facilities. Geberit’s 2×4 carrier spec sheet lists bowl rim height adjustment from 15 to 19 inches.

Our WOODBRIDGE listings give a frame height adjustable from 47 to 55 inches, not a bowl rim range. The Swiss Madison listings say to adjust the carrier legs to the height you want. For a specific rim height, check the installation manual. If height matters for mobility, ask your doctor or an occupational therapist what suits you.

Wall hung toilet weight limit

Look at the carrier’s rated load, and check the bowl’s listing too. Our WOODBRIDGE carrier and the Swiss Madison bundles each list a 500 lb rating. Geberit’s 2×4 spec sheet rates its carrier frame at 880 lb and says framing members should support that load without damage to the wall.

Rough-in and flush volume

A floor-mounted toilet is sized by its rough-in, the distance from the finished wall to the floor drain (commonly 12 inches). A wall-hung toilet drains horizontally through the wall into the carrier, so the floor rough-in does not apply. Instead, the drain, vent and water supply have to land where the carrier’s spec sheet shows. Geberit’s sheet shows a 3 inch drain pipe as typical and calls for a supply of at least 1/2 inch copper.

Flush volumes from our listings: WOODBRIDGE systems flush 0.8 or 1.6 GPF, the Swiss Madison Pur bundles flush 1.1 or 1.6 GPF, and the Hugo H is a single 1.28 GPF flush. A licensed plumber and your local code have the final word on drain size, venting and supply.

Frequently asked questions

Can an in-wall tank carrier go in a 2×4 wall?

Yes, if the carrier is made for 2×4 framing. Ours are listed for 2×4 studs. Geberit’s 2×4 carrier needs a 3-1/2 inch minimum wall, and its 2×6 version needs 5-1/2 inches.

What is the wall hung toilet weight limit?

It depends on the carrier. Our WOODBRIDGE and Swiss Madison listings give 500 lb. Geberit rates its 2×4 frame at 880 lb.

How high should a wall hung toilet be mounted?

Geberit puts standard height at about 14 to 15 inches to the rim and comfort height at about 16 to 17 inches. Its carriers adjust from 15 to 19 inches. Check your bowl’s manual for its own range.
