What Is Burl Wood Furniture? Veneer, Care and Cost

Burl wood furniture is furniture made from, or more often faced with, wood cut from a burl: a rounded, knotty outgrowth on a tree whose grain grew in a tangled, swirling pattern. Most burl pieces you can buy today use a thin burl veneer over a more stable core, because solid burl is scarce and hard to work. This guide explains how burls form, how veneer compares with solid burl, how to judge quality, how to care for it, what drives price, and which burl pieces we currently carry.

What is burl wood furniture, and how does a burl form?

A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner, usually seen as a rounded outgrowth on a trunk or branch filled with small knots. According to a USDA Forest Service plant physiologist, a burl is the result of hyperplasia: a greatly abnormal increase in wood production by the tree’s growth layer. The cells divide faster, for longer, and in irregular directions, which is what creates the dense, swirling figure woodworkers prize. The same source attributes burls to infection by bacteria, viruses or fungi, possibly insects, and notes there is not yet a good way to make a tree grow one.

Wikipedia’s burl entry adds that most burls grow below ground on the roots and are often found only after the tree falls, which helps explain the scarcity.

Solid burl vs burl veneer

Burl veneer is a thin layer sliced or peeled from a burl log and applied to the surface of furniture as a decorative layer, as Castlery’s burl guide describes it. Solid burl means the piece, or a part of it such as a tabletop, is cut straight from the burl itself.

Why most burl furniture is veneer:

  • Workability and stability. Burl grain is twisted and interlocked, so it can chip and shatter unpredictably when cut. A thin slice glued to a flat core is far easier to build with than a thick, irregular slab.
  • Cost and waste. One burl can be sliced into many thin sheets, so a scarce log can face a full dresser front or tabletop instead of producing one small solid board.
  • Pattern matching. Thin slices from the same burl can be laid side by side and mirrored for symmetrical designs, which is much harder with one solid chunk.

Veneer is real wood, not a print. If a listing does not say veneer or solid, treat construction as not listed and ask before you buy.

Common burl species

Castlery lists several burl types, each with its own look:

  • Elm burl: light to medium brown with irregular grain.
  • Poplar burl: tight clusters of knots and whorls; Castlery calls it valued for its pattern and affordability.
  • Walnut burl: rich dark color with deep, complex figure.
  • Maple burl: light color, creamy white to reddish brown.
  • Oak, cherry, redwood, amboyna and cocobolo burl: from tight oak swirls to the vivid reds of exotic amboyna.

In our catalog, the listings name poplar burl, ash burl and elm burl. For a broader look at the base woods, see our walnut vs oak furniture comparison.

The Raam, Ruth and Miamy pieces come from Benzara and use burl as an accent on drawer fronts and tops rather than over the whole piece.

What about a burl coffee table?

We do not have a dedicated burl coffee table in the catalog right now. Castlery’s guide notes that burl coffee tables often pair elm and poplar burl veneer with a glass top. For sizing any coffee table against your sofa, see our coffee table size guide, and call us if you want help finding a burl option.

How to spot quality burl furniture

  • Read the materials line. Good listings name the burl species and say veneer or solid. Vague phrases like “burl look” or “burl finish” deserve a question.
  • Check the core. Solid wood or a stable engineered core under the veneer is normal. Look at what the drawers and frame are made of too.
  • Look at edges and seams. Veneer should lie flat with no lifting at corners or edges, and matched panels should line up.
  • Ask about sourcing for solid burl. Wikipedia’s entry notes that burl poaching from protected redwoods is a real problem, and park staff encourage buyers to ask where burl came from.

Caring for burl wood and burl veneer

Burl care is mostly standard wood care. Castlery recommends:

  • Cleaning: dust with a soft, lint free cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasives; use mild soap and water for occasional deeper cleaning.
  • Polish: optional; apply a quality wood polish in the direction of the grain.
  • Light: long exposure to direct sunlight can fade the wood, so keep pieces away from bright windows or filter the light.
  • Rings and spills: use coasters and placemats, and blot spills right away instead of rubbing.

Humidity matters too. The Wood Database explains that wood gains and loses moisture from the air and swells or shrinks with it. Most interiors sit between 30% and 60% relative humidity, and wood swells much more under prolonged humidity above 85%. Keep burl away from heating vents, and aim for steady indoor humidity.

What drives the price of burl furniture

  • Rarity: Castlery attributes burl’s higher cost to rarity and exclusivity.
  • Species: exotic burls such as amboyna sit at the top; poplar is called more affordable.
  • Solid vs veneer: solid burl uses far more of a scarce log than a thin veneer.
  • Coverage and size: a burl inset or drawer accent costs less than a fully faced console or dresser.
  • Construction: core, joinery, marble tops and hardware add cost. Our table runs $511.82 to $1,636.99.

Styling burl wood briefly

Castlery suggests pairing burl with whites, grays and black, plus metal or glass, for a contemporary look, or with earthy tones and other woods for a warmer one. Let one burl piece be the focal point. For more on building a room around designer pieces, see our guide to buying designer furniture online.

Frequently asked questions

Is burl veneer real wood?

Yes. Burl veneer is a thin slice of real burl wood glued to a core. It is how most burl furniture is made.

Why is burl wood furniture expensive?

Burls are scarce and hard to work. Species, solid vs veneer, and how much of the piece is burl all change the price.

Is a burl coffee table hard to maintain?

No more than other wood tables. Use coasters, blot spills, dust with a soft cloth, and keep it out of strong direct sun.

How can I tell solid burl from burl veneer?

Check the listing first. Veneer usually shows flat, mirrored panels. If construction is not listed, ask the seller.
