Coffee Table Size Guide: Length, Height and Spacing

A coffee table size guide comes down to four numbers: the table’s length compared with your sofa, the depth of the top, its height next to the seat, and the floor you leave around it. Get those right and almost any style works. Get them wrong and the table looks lost, blocks the walkway or has you hunching for your drink. Below are the rules of thumb designers use, tested against real dimensions from coffee tables and sofas we sell.

Coffee table size guide: the four rules at a glance

These guidelines come from designers quoted by Homes and Gardens in How to choose the perfect size of coffee table and a guide to living room clearances, plus the furniture maker Castlery’s coffee table size guide.

Measurement Common guideline
Length About two thirds of the sofa’s length
Depth (front to back) 18 to 24 in is practical for most rooms; deeper for sectionals and large rooms
Height At or a few inches below the sofa seat height
Distance from the sofa About 14 to 18 in
Walkway past the table About 30 to 36 in between large pieces, 24 in in tight rooms

How big should a coffee table be compared with your sofa?

A common guideline is that a coffee table should be about two thirds the length of the sofa. Designer Elissa Hall gives Homes and Gardens the example of a 90 in sofa paired with a 60 in table.

Run the rule in reverse by multiplying a table’s length by 1.5. Dimensions below are from each listing:

Coffee table Width x depth Height Suits a sofa about
Rove Concepts Gallus (29 in size) 29 x 29 in 11 in 44 in
Rove Concepts Nova 31.5 x 31.5 in 14 in 47 in
Benzara Rena, round 36 x 36 in 19 in 54 in
Rove Concepts Romulus Nesting, round top 39.3 x 39.3 in 14.7 in 59 in
Rove Concepts Kyoto 40 x 40 in 12 in 60 in
Rove Concepts Liza Grande 40 x 40 in or 60 x 40 in 14.4 in 60 in or 90 in
Benzara Leyi, round 44 x 44 in 18 in 66 in
Rove Concepts Truman 53.1 x 27.5 in 15 in 80 in
Rove Concepts Liza Walnut 40.15 x 40.15 in or 60.2 x 40.15 in 9 in 60 in or 90 in
Rove Concepts Valerian 72 x 40 in 11 in 108 in

Rove Concepts listings note that measurements can vary by up to 2 in. For materials, weights and load limits, see our Rove Concepts coffee tables compared.

Worked examples: the Rove Concepts Porter Sofa is 84.6 in wide, so two thirds is about 56 in. The 53.1 in Truman lands close; the 60 in Liza runs slightly long. The Rove Concepts Hadrian Sofa is 82.2 in wide, which points to a table around 55 in.

Depth matters too. Victoria Darnell of Hooker Furnishings tells Homes and Gardens that a depth of 18 to 24 in “provides ample surface without overwhelming the space.” The Truman (27.5 in deep) sits just past that range, and 40 in deep square tables like the Kyoto and Liza suit a large room or a sectional better than a narrow one.

Coffee table height: work from the seat, not the sofa

Designer Sarah Montgomery tells Homes and Gardens that the table “should be at or just a few inches below your seat height.” Castlery puts it at roughly 2 to 4 in below the cushion and suggests 16 to 18 in for everyday lounging, 10 to 14 in next to low lounge seating, and 18 to 22 in if you eat or work at the table.

Check seat height on the sofa listing:

  • Hadrian Sofa, 18.5 in seat. Look at 14.5 to 18.5 in: the Truman (15 in) or Leyi (18 in). The 19 in Rena sits slightly above this seat.
  • Porter Sofa, 14.5 in seat. Aim for 10.5 to 14.5 in: the Liza Grande (14.4 in), Kyoto (12 in) or Gallus (11 in).
  • Porter Sectional, 12.6 in seat. A low lounge seat: the 11 in Valerian falls in Castlery’s 10 to 14 in range, and the 9 in Liza Walnut sits lower still.

Note that “Grande” on the Liza refers to height: the same footprint in a 14.4 in version instead of the low 9 to 9.4 in tops.

How far should a coffee table be from the couch?

Designer Izabela Tokarski tells Homes and Gardens that a coffee table should sit “about 14 to 18 inches away from your sofa.” In a TV room, Montgomery sets it closer, at about 15 in. Darnell suggests at least 18 in of space around the table for moving through, and Tokarski recommends about 30 to 36 in between large pieces where people walk, or as little as 24 in in tighter quarters.

Add it up. With the Porter Sofa (38.1 in deep), a 16 in gap, a 40 in deep Liza and a 30 in walkway on the far side, you need about 124 in, a little over 10 ft, from the back of the sofa to the next obstacle. Swap the Liza for the 27.5 in deep Truman and that drops to about 112 in. Our sectional sofa dimensions guide covers the room’s other clearances.

Coffee table size for a sectional: round, rectangle or nesting

The two thirds rule breaks down on a big sectional. The Rove Concepts Porter Sectional is 116 in wide, which would call for a table about 77 in long, longer than any table in our chart. Castlery’s guide suggests 47 to 63 in for sectionals of 94 in and up, or two nesting tables instead.

  • Long rectangle. Darnell notes that rectangular and oval tables suit longer sofas. The 72 x 40 in Valerian or the 60 x 40 in Liza fill the run in front of a wide sectional.
  • Square or round for the corner. On an L shape, a 40 in square or round table placed toward the corner can serve both runs. Round tops have no corners in the walkway, and Castlery notes that a curved sofa pairs naturally with a round or oval table.
  • Nesting or a pair. Designer Piper Skillman suggests a cluster of tables when one large table is hard to balance. The Romulus nesting table is listed as available as a set, and a pair of smaller tables such as the Gallus or Nova can cover a long sofa.

Before you order

Tape the table’s footprint on the floor with painter’s tape, then sit on the sofa and reach for it. Walk the route past it. If either feels awkward, size down. Frequently asked questions

What is a standard coffee table height?

The tables above range from 9 to 19 in tall. Rather than chase a standard, match your sofa: a common guideline is at or a few inches below the seat height, so a 16 to 18 in seat pairs with a table of roughly 12 to 18 in.

How far should a coffee table be from the couch?

About 14 to 18 in is the usual guideline, slightly closer (around 15 in) in a TV room where you want to reach snacks, and keep 24 to 36 in of walkway on the other sides.

Is a round or rectangular coffee table better for a small room?

Designers quoted by Homes and Gardens favor round and square tables for smaller, more intimate spaces and rectangles for longer sofas.

Can a coffee table be taller than the sofa seat?

The common guideline is at or below seat height. Castlery’s exception is a table you eat or work at, where it suggests 18 to 22 in.
