A wine glass rack keeps stemware off crowded shelves and ready next to the bottles. The right one depends on three measurements: how wide your glasses are at the bowl, how tall they stand, and what you are screwing into. This guide covers wall mounted, under-cabinet and built-in bar cabinet setups, with real capacities from the racks we carry. For bottle storage, start with our wine rack and cellar storage guide.

Wall mounted wine glass rack: how many glasses per foot
Wall racks hang glasses by the foot in a slot or between rails, bowl down. Capacity comes down to width and depth.
- W Series Stemware Rack: one 13 in wide rack holds 2, 4 or 6 glasses (single, double or triple deep). Racks join side by side, and the listing says each extension adds 50% capacity; two joined racks in the Wet Bar kit hold 5, 10 or 15. Our math: roughly 2 to 2.5 glasses per 13 in of width, per row of depth.
- Vino Series Stemware 2: two slim aluminum rails, 8 in wide, holding 2 glasses (most sizes). Our math: about 3 glasses per foot if you run several units in a line.
The W Series rack accepts glasses up to 4 3/8 in across, so measure your widest bowl, not the foot. Large Burgundy bowls are the usual problem; if yours are close, call 866-777-2590 before you order.
A wall mounted wine glass rack suits a wet bar, the wall beside a wine fridge, or the top or bottom of a W Series bottle column, which is the same 13 in width. Our wine display wall ideas show how that looks on a full wall, and the small spaces guide covers kitchen and dining room placement.
Clearance: how much room a hanging glass needs
Hanging glasses need space below the rack for their full height, plus room to lift one up and slide it out. VintageView’s Wet Bar kit listing says to allow up to 8 in below the stemware racks. Measure your tallest glass from foot to rim and add a little room for your hand.
- Above a counter: keep the rims clear of the faucet and anything you use underneath.
- Above bottles: leave enough gap to pull a bottle without hitting a bowl.
- Mixed heights: group tall glasses together so one tall glass does not set the clearance for the whole row.
Hanging wine glass rack vs under-cabinet vs in-cabinet
Wall
The most flexible choice: set any height, add racks later and line them up with bottle storage. The trade-off is open-air glasses (see the dust note below).
Under a cabinet or shelf
Under-cabinet rails use empty space over a counter. We do not currently list a standalone under-cabinet rail. If you mount one yourself, check the cabinet bottom’s thickness so screws do not poke through; many are thin panels, not solid wood.
Built into a bar cabinet
A cabinet with a built-in stemware rack skips the mounting work. Capacity varies a lot:
- The Benzara Wine Cabinet with 2 drawers hangs six glasses from the underside of its upper cabinet and holds five bottles.
- The Benzara Denali bar cabinet lists a hanging rack for 18 wine glasses and a 14 bottle wine rack. Its listing gives several conflicting sets of dimensions, so call 866-777-2590 to confirm the overall size before you order.
- The Benzara Dina Wine Cabinet Bar ($639.34, 47.24 x 13.78 x 34.84 in) and the Benzara Sana 7 tier wine rack ($565.03, 24 x 12 x 48 in, 35 bottles) both include stemware racks, but their listings do not publish how many glasses fit. Call us to confirm if glass count matters to you.
Mounting a stemware rack into studs or drywall
- Vino Series Stemware 2: order the Wood/Stud version for wood-backed walls or the Drywall version, which includes VintageView’s collars. Our listing says collars are required for drywall installs, and hardware for both drywall (collar option) and wood-backed walls is included.
- W Series Stemware Rack: the listing says it installs directly to drywall, wood and other surfaces. The W Series kits that include the stemware rack list hardware for drywall and wood-backed installs.
For stud vs anchor decisions, tile walls, and adding wood backing before drywall goes up, see our wine rack installation guide. If the glass rack is part of a cellar build, our wine cellar racks article covers layout.
How to store wine glasses: upside down or upright?
Wine Spectator’s Dr. Vinny answered this in a reader Q&A on storing wine glasses. His view: hanging glasses upside down in a rack is ideal if you have the space. In a cupboard, he suggests storing glasses upright, because the rim is delicate and can chip, and he warns against alternating up and down, where a heavy foot can knock a neighboring rim. He also notes two downsides: glasses in open racks can collect dust, and in a kitchen that can turn into a sticky film of dust and grease. Glasses stored in wooden cupboards can smell a little musty, so give them a sniff before you pour.
In practice: hang the glasses you use every week, away from the stove, and keep rarely used ones upright in a closed cabinet.
Shipping, returns and help
Orders of $999 or more ship free by freight; below that, shipping is a flat $200, so a single stemware rack is best added to a larger wine rack order. See our return and refund policy before you buy. You can find the full lineup on our VintageView brand page, or call 866-777-2590 (Mon to Fri, 9AM to 6PM PST) for help sizing a layout.
Frequently asked questions
How many glasses fit on a wall mounted wine glass rack?
A VintageView W Series Stemware Rack holds 2, 4 or 6 glasses by depth; two joined racks hold 5, 10 or 15. A Vino Series Stemware 2 holds 2.
Will my large Burgundy glasses fit a stemware rack?
The W Series Stemware Rack takes glasses up to 4 3/8 in in diameter. Measure the widest part of the bowl and call us if it is close.
How much space do I need under a hanging wine glass rack?
VintageView’s Wet Bar kit listing says to allow up to 8 in below the stemware racks. Measure your tallest glass and leave a little extra so you can lift it out.
Is a stemware rack better than a cabinet for wine glasses?
A hanging rack keeps glasses within reach and protects the rims, which Wine Spectator calls the ideal setup if you have the space, but in open air they can collect dust and kitchen grease, as Wine Spectator notes. A cabinet keeps them clean. Many people hang the everyday glasses and keep special ones upright behind doors.
