Wine Rack Installation: Studs vs Drywall Anchors

Short answer: a wall mounted wine rack can go into studs, into drywall with the right anchors, or into wood backing installed behind the drywall. Studs and backing are the strongest and quickest to install. Rated drywall anchors are a legitimate option for most residential racks, and VintageView includes hardware for both drywall and wood-backed walls with its W Series and Evolution racks. The right choice depends on how many bottles you plan to hang, what the wall is made of, and whether the studs line up with where you want the rack.

How much weight are you actually hanging?

Start with the load. VintageView puts a full 750 ml wine bottle at about 3 pounds and notes that a 36-bottle wall section holds roughly 110 pounds, in its guide to installing wine racks into drywall. Using that 3 pound figure, here is what some common racks weigh in bottles alone:

Rack Bottle capacity (750 ml) Approximate bottle weight
W Series Single 1 About 3 lb
W Series Wine Rack 1 3 (single deep) About 9 lb
W Series Wine Rack 5 15, 30 or 45 (single, double or triple deep) About 45, 90 or 135 lb
Evolution Wine Wall 30 3C 18, 36 or 54 About 54, 108 or 162 lb

Depth matters as much as height. A triple deep rack holds three times the bottles of a single deep rack of the same size, and it also sticks out further from the wall, which increases the leverage on the fasteners.

Option 1: Mount into studs

Screwing directly into wood studs is the traditional choice. VintageView describes wood as generally stronger than drywall and often faster to install, noting that simple wood screws are all most wine racks need in that situation, in its mounting materials guide.

The catch is layout. Studs sit at fixed spacing, and a narrow vertical rack like the W Series may not land on a stud exactly where you want it. You can shift the rack to a stud, accept anchors for the fasteners that miss, or add backing.

Best for

  • Deep or tall racks with a lot of bottles
  • Any wall where a stud happens to line up with your design

Option 2: Mount into drywall with anchors

Drywall on its own is weak, but a rated anchor spreads the load across the board. VintageView notes that a single toggle-style drywall anchor is often rated for 50 pounds or more and that most racking systems use six mounting points. It also says its W Series and Evolution Wine Wall hardware exceeds any weight the rack would hold.

Our W Series and Evolution product pages confirm that hardware for both drywall and wood-backed installs is included, so you do not need to buy anchors separately for those racks.

Vino Pins: built for drywall

Peg-style racks put all of a bottle’s weight on one small point, so they need a special anchor. The Vino Pins 1 is designed to mount directly into drywall, masonry or wood with no backer board, using VintageView’s drywall collar system. The product page lists a minimum drywall thickness of 1/2 in and says to add 1/2 in to the depth when you use the collars. Choose the Collars option when ordering if you are installing into drywall; the wood hardware is included either way.

Best for

  • Finished walls where you cannot open the drywall
  • Small displays over a wet bar or in a kitchen
  • Peg displays with Vino Pins

Option 3: Add wood backing behind the drywall

If you are building a wine room or finishing a basement, install plywood backing or blocking between the studs before the drywall goes up. Then every fastener goes into wood, wherever the rack lands. VintageView recommends backing for full wine cellar builds for two reasons: owners feel more confident with a valuable collection, and wood screws install faster than anchors.

Best for

  • New construction or renovations with open walls
  • Large feature walls such as the W Series Feature Wall 6, which holds 90, 180 or 270 bottles across five columns

Tile, stone and glass walls

For tile, you drill through the tile into the drywall or plywood behind it, and the rack is only as strong as that substrate. Tile and laminate crack easily, so take care. VintageView says most stone can hold a few racks with proper masonry anchors but recommends extreme caution with fragile surfaces like brick.

When a wall is fragile, expensive or made of glass, skip wall mounting entirely. A floor-to-ceiling frame holds the racks off the wall. The W Series Wine Rack Frame 10 is a 10 foot steel frame cut to your ceiling height and holds up to 162 bottles with W Series racks (sold separately). For Evolution, the Evolution Single Sided Wine Wall Post Kit 10 3C is a complete floor-to-ceiling kit.

Situation Best method

New wine room or open walls Plywood backing, then wood screws
Tile, glass or fragile stone Floor-to-ceiling frame or post kit

Frequently asked questions

Can a metal wine rack hang on drywall without studs?

Yes, with rated anchors. VintageView says its W Series and Evolution Wine Wall hardware exceeds the weight those racks hold, and the hardware for drywall installs comes in the box.

How much does a full wine rack weigh?

Plan on about 3 pounds per 750 ml bottle. A rack holding 45 bottles carries roughly 135 pounds of wine before you count the rack itself.

Should I add backing for a wine wall?

If the walls are open, yes. Backing lets you use wood screws everywhere and removes any worry about where the studs fall. VintageView recommends it for full cellar builds.

Can I mount a wine rack on tile?

You can drill through tile into the wall behind it, but tile cracks easily. For fragile or high-end surfaces, a floor-to-ceiling frame avoids drilling the wall at all.
