Wood Burning vs Electric Sauna Heater: How to Choose

Wood burning vs electric sauna heater comes down to what you want to manage. A wood burning sauna stove needs no heater circuit, but it adds a chimney, clearances, firewood, ash and more questions from your building department and insurer. An electric heater needs a 240V circuit and an electrician, then runs from a dial or an app. Below we compare the two using the heater options on the Dundalk Leisurecraft outdoor saunas we sell and the manuals and pages from Harvia and HUUM.

Wood burning vs electric sauna heater at a glance

Wood burning stove Electric heater
Power None for the heater Dedicated 240V circuit
Venting Chimney through the wall or roof No chimney; room vents per the manual
Starting a session Light a fire, add wood to hold heat Switch on, or use a timer or app (model dependent)
Upkeep Ash, chimney sweeping, stones Stones, keep controls dry
Permits and insurance Fire code check; tell your insurer Electrical work and permit rules; check locally
Heater option on our listings +$1,225.17 to $2,137.74, plus $574.90 to $980.53 for a chimney +$1,051.02 to $3,500.57, plus wiring

Option prices are the increases on our product pages in October 2026 when you pick a heater or chimney. They exclude electrician, permit and firewood costs.

Which saunas offer wood, electric or both?

  • Wood only: the CT Tranquility barrel ($5,654.62) and CT Serenity barrel ($6,158) offer Narvi Kuru 14, Narvi NC 16 and TimberGlow stoves (plus HUUM Hive Wood on the Serenity), with chimneys out the back or top. The Georgian with Changeroom ($10,130) offers similar stoves with side wall chimneys.
  • Electric only: the CT Harmony barrel ($5,555.16) offers 9 kW Harvia KIP, HUUM Drop, HUUM Hive, Designer B and Homecraft Revive heaters, the CT Palmer cabin ($7,177) offers 7 to 8 kW options, and the CT Granby is listed as electric only.
  • Either: the CT Elation barrel ($6,976) lists wood or electric, sold separately, and the standard CT Georgian cabin ($7,647) recommends an 8 kW heater or wood burning.

Our barrel sauna vs cabin sauna comparison covers the shape decision.

Wood burning sauna stove: what installation involves

Chimney and clearances

Harvia’s wood stove manual for its M series asks for an insulated chimney rated T600 with a 115 mm connection, and says the stove is not suitable for a shared flue. Harvia’s M3 product page lists safety distances of 11.81 in to the front and to combustible side and rear walls, and 3.94 ft to the ceiling, while the older manual edition we opened lists larger side and rear distances. Clearances differ by stove and edition, so follow the manual that ships with yours. Leisurecraft also sells an extended stainless T ($289) for thicker walls, bigger roof overhangs or stoves with larger safety distances.

The same manual asks you to protect the floor (at least 60 mm for concrete, protective bedding for tile and combustible floors) and to plan fresh air and exhaust vents around the stove. For the base, see our outdoor sauna foundation guide.

Fire codes and insurance

Harvia’s manual says all local regulations must be followed and points owners to local fire authorities for fire safety rules. Chimney, setback and burn ban rules vary by town, so call your building or fire department before you order. Progressive’s guide to fireplaces and insurance (progressive.com/answers/do-fireplaces-impact-insurance/) says to notify your insurer when you add a wood burning stove, that some insurers require professional installation and an inspection, and that a stove will likely raise your premium.

Firewood

Harvia’s M3 data lists a 2.7 kg ignition load and 3.2 kg refuelling loads, with firewood up to 35 cm long, and says a couple of pieces hold bathing temperature once hot. It warns that several full loads in a row can overheat the room, stove and chimney. The EPA’s Burn Wise best practices say wood burns best below 20 percent moisture and should be seasoned at least six months. We found no reliable source for firewood cost per session.

Electric sauna heater pros and cons

Pros: no chimney or ash, built-in controls (our Harvia KIP listing describes a 1 hour timer with up to an 8 hour delay), and app control on the HUUM WiFi options.

Cons: a dedicated 240V circuit, and on an outdoor sauna the run from your panel can be a real part of the budget. Harvia does not allow the control unit outdoors. Our home sauna electrical requirements guide covers amps, wire, permits and running cost.

Size either type to the room. Harvia lists the KIP80B for 251 to 424 cu ft, HUUM lists its Hive Wood 13 for 6 to 13 m³ (about 212 to 459 cu ft), and Harvia lists the M3 wood stove at 212 to 459 cu ft. The Georgian’s 353 cu ft room fits all three.

Heat-up time, steam and feel

Our CT Elation listing gives heating times of about 30 to 40 minutes depending on conditions, with either heater type. We found no manufacturer source stating a clear speed advantage for wood or electric.

On feel, this is opinion. Many sauna fans like the crackle and ritual of a wood fire and find its löyly (the steam when you ladle water on the stones) softer; HUUM describes its Hive Wood as giving “mild and long-lasting steam.” Others prefer an electric heater that holds a set temperature. Both use stones and water, so both give you löyly.

Wood fired sauna vs electric: what each costs on our listings

Setup (October 2026) Heat Price before wiring or permits
CT Harmony + Harvia KIP 9 kW Electric $6,606.18
CT Harmony + HUUM Drop 9 kW (local control) Electric $7,679.15
CT Tranquility + Narvi Kuru 14 + chimney out the top Wood $7,483.12
CT Serenity + Narvi Kuru 14 + chimney out the top Wood $8,071.47
CT Palmer + Harvia KIP 8 kW Electric $8,607
Georgian with Changeroom + Narvi Kuru 14 + side wall chimney Wood $12,400.92

Orders of $999 or more ship free by freight. Harvia’s US pages send buyers to a dealer, HUUM’s US page shows no price and Leisurecraft’s site was down when we checked, so we could not compare against a manufacturer direct price.

Maintenance

For wood, Harvia’s manual says to empty the ash box before each fire and sweep the chimney and connection pipes at regular intervals. The U.S. Fire Administration’s heating safety page recommends a yearly professional cleaning and inspection of heating equipment and chimneys. For both types, Harvia says to rearrange the stones at least once a year and replace any that break down.

Health note: sauna benefits on product pages are manufacturer claims. Heat bathing is not for everyone; if you are pregnant, have a heart condition or blood pressure concerns, or take medication that affects heat tolerance, ask your doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

Which sauna heater is best, wood or electric?

Neither suits everyone. Wood fits if running 240V to the site is hard, you enjoy tending a fire and your local rules and insurer allow it. Electric fits if you want a timer, no chimney and less upkeep, and can pay for the circuit.

Does a wood burning sauna stove need a permit?

Often, yes. Harvia’s manual says local regulations apply and local fire authorities can explain the rules. Check with your building department and tell your insurer first.

Is a wood fired sauna cheaper to run than electric?

It depends on your firewood price and electricity rate. Electric cost is kW times hours times your rate; wood cost depends on what you pay per cord and how much you burn.

Which models let me choose either heater?

On our listings, the CT Elation and the standard CT Georgian. Call us to confirm heater options before you order.
