Electric Fireplace in Bedroom: Safety, Size and Picks

An electric fireplace in a bedroom works well when you treat the flame and the heater as two separate things. The flame is LED light, and you can run it on its own. The heater is a fan-forced unit of up to 1500 watts, and it follows the same rules as any space heater: keep bedding and curtains back, plug it in properly, and do not leave it running while you sleep. For types and running costs in general, see our electric fireplace buying guide.

Is it safe to have an electric fireplace in a bedroom?

Yes, if you install and use it the way the manual says. There is no combustion, flue or fumes. The risks are those of any electric heater, and Amantii’s manuals spell them out:

  • Keep combustibles 3 feet away. The WM-FM and Symmetry XtraSlim manuals say to keep furniture, cushions, bedding, paper, clothes and curtains at least 3 feet from the front of the unit. The Traditional XtraSlim manual says 3 feet from the front, sides and rear.
  • No extension cords. The Traditional XtraSlim manual says to avoid an extension cord because it will overheat and cause a fire, and not to run the cord under carpet or rugs.
  • Use a proper circuit. The WM-FM manual calls for a 15 amp, 120 volt grounded circuit and says a dedicated circuit is preferable so breakers do not trip.
  • Take care when unattended. The manuals say extreme caution is needed whenever the unit is left operating and unattended, and around children.

Fire safety groups say the same for heaters in general. The NFPA heating safety page says to keep space heaters 3 feet from anything that can burn and to turn them off before bed. The U.S. Fire Administration says to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heat sources and to turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Can you leave an electric fireplace on overnight?

Our advice is no, not with the heater on. NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration both say to turn space heaters off when you go to bed, and Amantii’s manuals warn about unattended operation. We treat time asleep as unattended time.

  • Use the built-in off timer. The WM-FM, Symmetry XtraSlim and Traditional XtraSlim manuals describe a remote timer that turns the fireplace off after 30 minutes to 8 hours, in half-hour steps. Set a short time so it shuts down soon after you fall asleep.
  • Do not add an outside timer or smart plug. The WM-FM and Symmetry XtraSlim manuals say not to use the heater with a programmer, timer or other device that switches it on automatically, because of fire risk if the heater is covered or positioned incorrectly.

Flame-only mode does not run the heater, but the manuals’ caution about unattended operation applies to the whole appliance. Treat it like a lamp you switch off at night.

Electric fireplace flame only, no heat

Amantii’s FAQ says most of its fireplaces can operate with the heat on or off. Our WM-FM listings say the flame effects and heater operate independently, and the Traditional XtraSlim listings say you can enjoy the flames with or without heat.

Best size electric fireplace for a bedroom

Heat. Multiply room length by width (a 12 by 14 foot room is 168 sq ft). Our listings rate the slim Amantii units below for up to 400 sq ft and the WM-FM and Zero Clearance units for 400 to 500 sq ft, so the low setting (750 W on the models whose manuals we checked) or a thermostat is usually the better choice in a bedroom. The Symmetry Lumina’s thermostat holds a set temperature from 59 to 82 F. A longer fireplace does not necessarily give more heat: the Lumina listings and the WM-FM manual give the same 1500 W maximum across sizes. See our linear electric fireplace sizes guide.

Wall. A 26 to 42 inch unit usually suits a bedroom wall better than a 60 inch linear model and leaves space for the 3 foot clearance to the bed. If a TV goes above it, see our guide to an electric fireplace with a TV above.

Prices are from our listings at the time of writing. Amantii sells through dealers rather than direct, so there is no factory price to compare. Amantii’s Symmetry Xtra Slim page says that model has been discontinued, so call us at 866-777-2590 to confirm stock on the 42 inch unit. See every model on our Amantii brand page.

Noise and light at night

Noise. The heater is fan-forced, so expect fan sound when heat is on. Amantii says the Symmetry Lumina’s redesigned heater fan runs 4 dB quieter than the original Symmetry, which makes it the pick if you will use heat in the bedroom often. Amantii’s FAQ says the crackling sound on the Symmetry Bespoke can be switched off.

Light. Choose a model where you can dim or switch off the extras. The Lumina app adjusts flame brightness, speed and tray lighting. The WM-FM manual describes a button that turns the ember bed and mood light on and off.

Placement near the bed and curtains

  • Keep the bed, bedding and pillows at least 3 feet from the front, and from the sides and rear where the manual says so.
  • Avoid walls under windows with long curtains. The WM-FM manual also suggests a spot where direct sunlight will not hit the screen.
  • Keep the heat outlet clear of nightstands, baskets and clothing.
  • Plan the outlet so the cord is short, out of walkways and plugged straight into the wall.

Wall mount vs built-in electric fireplace in a bedroom

A wall mount unit such as the WM-FM hangs like a picture and plugs in. A recessed unit sits flush, which helps in a tight bedroom where a few inches of projection can crowd a walkway; the XtraSlim models recess into a standard 2×4 wall. Compare the trade-offs in built-in vs wall-mount electric fireplace, and see our recessed electric fireplace installation guide for framing and wiring. App control is covered in our Amantii smart WiFi fireplace guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to have an electric fireplace in a bedroom?

Yes, when it is installed to the manual, plugged into a grounded outlet with no extension cord, and kept at least 3 feet from bedding, curtains and furniture.

Can you leave an electric fireplace on overnight?

We do not recommend it. NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration say to turn space heaters off before bed. Use the fireplace’s built-in off timer instead.

What is the best size electric fireplace for a bedroom?

For most bedrooms, a 26 to 42 inch unit fits the wall and leaves room for clearances. The heaters above are rated for up to 400 or 400 to 500 sq ft.

Can I put a bedroom electric fireplace on a smart plug or timer?

No. Amantii’s manuals say not to use the heater with an outside timer or any device that switches it on automatically. Use the fireplace’s own timer or app.
