Are Electric Fireplaces Safe for Kids?

Are electric fireplaces safe for kids? For most families, an electric fireplace is a lower risk choice than a gas or wood fireplace: there is no real flame, no combustion and no carbon monoxide, and the flame effect itself is just light. That does not make it hands off. The heater outlet and the air around it get hot, the cord and controls attract curious toddlers, and a freestanding unit can be pulled over. With the right model, placement and a few habits, an electric fireplace can sit comfortably in a busy family room.

Are electric fireplaces safe for kids? Start with the heat source

An electric fireplace has two separate systems: an LED flame display and a fan forced heater. On the Amantii models we carry, the listings say the flame effects and heater operate independently, so you can run the flames with the heat completely off. When the heater is on, warm air leaves through a vent. Depending on the model, that vent is a slot in the glass surround (as on the WM-FM series), a front vent (as on the Zero Clearance flush mount models), or a concealed vent at the front top that pushes heat down and out (as on the Symmetry models).

That vent location is the main burn point to think about with small children. Amantii’s own Symmetry Slim owner’s manual says plainly that the fireplace is hot when in use, that bare skin should not touch hot surfaces, and that extreme caution is necessary when any heater is used near children.

Is electric fireplace glass cool to the touch?

This is the most common question parents ask, and the answer is “cooler than gas, but check the model.” Electric Fireplaces Depot, a fireplace retailer, writes that the vent area will be warm when the heater runs, while the glass front and surround on most premium units are designed to stay at or near room temperature, and it advises checking the manufacturer’s specifications because surface temperatures vary. Compare that with gas: Nationwide Children’s Hospital notes that the glass on gas fireplaces can exceed 500 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and stay hot for an hour or two after shutoff.

So cool touch glass is a real advantage of electric units, but treat any glass with a heater vent built into it as a surface that can be warm. Nationwide Children’s offers a simple rule that works for any heat source: if it feels warm to you, it is too hot for kids to touch.

Electric fireplace child safety: a quick comparison

Hot front glass Usually much cooler; vent area warm with heater on Very hot, stays hot after shutoff Very hot doors and screen
Can run without heat Yes, flame only mode No No
Main remaining risks Heater vent, cords, remote, tip over Glass burns, switches Burns, embers, smoke

Electric fireplace toddler checklist

  • Use flame only mode. When you want the look without the heat, turn the heater off. Several of our Amantii listings say the heater can be turned off for year round flame viewing.
  • Mount it out of reach or build it in. A wall mounted or recessed unit keeps the vent above toddler height. Our guide on how high to mount an electric fireplace covers viewing height and clearances.
  • Keep the remote up high. In its hot glass safety tips for gas fireplaces, the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association recommends keeping remotes out of children’s reach and checking your manual for ways to disable it when not in use.
  • Manage the cord. Amantii’s manual warns against running the cord under carpet or rugs and asks you to keep it out of traffic areas. A hardwired installation by an electrician removes the cord entirely.
  • Keep the 3 foot zone clear. The same manual asks for furniture, cushions, bedding, paper, clothes and curtains to stay at least 3 feet from the front of the unit. Toy bins and floor pillows count.
  • Do not block the vents. Nothing should go into a vent or exhaust opening, per the manual. Teach kids that the slot is not a mail slot.
  • Supervise while it runs. Turn the heater off when you leave the room or go to bed.

Timers, smart plugs and automatic switching

Many parents want to put the fireplace on a smart plug so it can be shut off from a phone. Read your manual first. Amantii’s Symmetry Slim manual says not to use the heater with a programmer, timer, separate remote control system or other device that switches the heater on automatically, because of fire risk if the heater is covered, and says the unit must not be supplied through an external switching device. Use the fireplace’s own controls and built in features instead, and ask us about the specific model before adding any outside switch.

Kid friendly Amantii models we carry

Wall mount and built in units are the easiest to keep away from small hands. Each of these lists 4,800 BTU of supplemental heat on our site:

See the full lineup on our Amantii brand page, and use our electric fireplace buying guide to size a unit for your wall. If a child’s room or nursery is on your list, read electric fireplace in a bedroom first, and for a side by side look at heat and safety, see electric fireplace vs space heater.

Installation and electrical notes

Follow the clearances in your installation manual, especially for built in units inside a framed wall. Blocked airflow can make a unit overheat; Amantii’s troubleshooting guide says that if the appliance overheats, a thermal switch shuts it off and you should switch it off and let it cool for 10 minutes before restarting. If you hardwire a unit or add a dedicated circuit, use a licensed electrician; local code has the final word.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child get burned by an electric fireplace?

Yes, though the risk is lower than with gas or wood. The heater outlet and nearby surfaces get hot while the heater runs. Use flame only mode around toddlers and mount the unit out of reach.

Do electric fireplaces have cool touch glass?

On many models the front glass stays far cooler than gas fireplace glass, but surfaces near the heater vent can be warm. Check the specific model’s manual for surface temperature details.

Is it safe to leave an electric fireplace on with kids in the room?

With an adult present, yes. Keep the 3 foot zone clear, keep the remote up high and turn the heater off when no one is supervising.

Are electric fireplaces safer than space heaters for kids?

A fixed wall mount or built in unit removes the tip over risk of a portable heater and keeps the cord in one place. It still produces heat at the vent, so the same supervision rules apply.
