Balcony Bistro Set Guide: Sizes for Small Spaces

The best balcony bistro set is the one that leaves you a clear path to the railing and lets the door open all the way. For most small balconies that means a round or narrow table about 24 to 28 inches across, two armless chairs, and a frame heavy enough not to shift in the wind. Below: how to measure, folding vs fixed, and nine Benzara pieces we carry compared by listed size and price.

Measure your balcony before you shop

Take four measurements and write them down. They matter more than style.

  • Usable depth. Measure from the wall or door frame to the inside of the railing, not to the outer edge of the slab.
  • Door swing. If your balcony door swings outward, mark the arc on the floor with tape. Nothing should sit inside it.
  • Walkway. Decide where you will walk from the door to the railing or to a plant, and keep that strip open with chairs pushed in and pulled out.
  • Railing height. Compare it with the seat height of any chair you are considering. Kids and pets climb, so keep furniture away from the railing on upper floors.

A simple test: tape the table footprint on the floor, then add the depth of a chair on each side (the chair listings below run about 18 to 21 inches deep) plus room to slide it back. If the result crowds the door or the walkway, size down or choose a folding set.

Small patio table set sizing: round, square or oval

Round tops are the easiest fit on a balcony because there are no corners to bump on the way past. The round sets we carry are listed at 24 to 27.25 inches across.

Square tops of similar size can push flat against a wall, which frees floor space when you only need one chair out. Oval and rectangular tops suit long, shallow balconies: the Monalisa set’s oval table is listed at 39.5 inches long but only 18.75 inches wide, so it can run parallel to the railing. If you want seating for four or a full dining table, our guide to outdoor dining table size covers that in detail.

Complete sets for two

The Rune set is the most compact complete set here, with a 24.25 inch round slatted top and powder-coated iron frame. The Charlie set is similar in footprint at 24 inches round, in cast aluminum with a copper finish, and adds a 2 inch umbrella hole and floor protectors on the legs. The Coppertone set has the largest round top of the complete sets (27.25 inches) and a built-in ice bucket, but it is also the lowest table at 27 inches high. The Monalisa set is the pick for a long, narrow balcony thanks to its 18.75 inch wide oval top.

Mix and match a table with chairs

Buying a table and chairs separately lets you fit an odd space. The gray Ambre table (27.5 inch round top, straight legs) is described on its listing as sized for seating two, and it pairs with the armless Bo chairs, which are sold as a set of two. Armless chairs tuck further under a table, which helps when every inch counts.

Folding vs fixed balcony furniture

Castlery’s small balcony decorating guide suggests a folding bistro set that can be tucked away when not in use, and that advice holds up. It makes sense if your balcony has other uses or you bring furniture inside for winter.

The Cami table and chairs are the folding option in this group. The table folds on an X base and the chair is listed at 15.75 inches deep, the slimmest chair here. Two chairs and the table come to $882.79 at current listed prices.

For a very shallow balcony, consider skipping the dining table entirely. The slim Balcony Bar Table is just 16.5 inches deep and 48 inches long. Its 49.75 inch height calls for bar stools, which are not included.

Weight, wind and building rules

Upper floor balconies can see stronger gusts than ground level patios, and light furniture can slide or tip. Our listings give these product weights: Cami chair 8.82 lb, Ambre table 17.64 lb, Rune set 33.73 lb, Coppertone set 33.95 lb, Charlie set 49.82 lb and Monalisa set 52.91 lb. Heavier iron and cast aluminum sets are a better bet on an exposed balcony than light folding pieces. On windy days, fold and stow light chairs, close any umbrella, and do not leave cushions loose.

Before you buy, check your lease, HOA or building rules. Many buildings limit what can go on a balcony, from grills and umbrellas to items attached to the railing. We cannot tell you the load rating of your balcony; ask your building manager if you have any doubts, especially for heavier sets or planters.

Cushions, winter storage and materials

Slatted metal and wood seats are comfortable for coffee but firm for long dinners, so many owners add seat pads. Castlery recommends outdoor fabrics such as solution-dyed acrylic, polyester or olefin because they resist fading and moisture. Bring cushions indoors when it rains and in winter.

For off-season storage, a folding set can stand against a closet wall. Fixed sets should be covered. If you are deciding between iron, aluminum, wood and rattan, our guide to the best patio furniture material compares them. Frequently asked questions

What size bistro table fits a small balcony?

For two people, a round top around 24 to 28 inches is a common fit, which matches the round tables in our list (24 to 27.5 inches). Measure the table plus a chair on each side and keep the door swing and walkway clear.

Is a folding small patio table set better for a balcony?

It is if you need the floor space for other uses or want to store furniture indoors. Fixed sets are usually heavier and feel steadier, which helps on windy upper floors.

Will balcony furniture blow away?

Light pieces can move in strong wind. Choose heavier iron or cast aluminum sets for exposed balconies, fold and stow light chairs before storms, and keep furniture away from the railing.

Can I return a bistro set if it does not fit?

Returns follow our return and refund policy. Measuring first is the best way to avoid a return.
