The right outdoor dining table size depends on two things: how many people you seat, and how much patio or deck you have once chairs are pulled out. As a starting point, a 48 in round or square table seats 4, a 60 in round or a table about 72 in long seats 6, and you need roughly 84 to 96 in of length for 8. Outdoors, railings, steps and grills eat into that space fast.
This guide covers the outdoor side of sizing: clearance on a deck or patio, umbrella fit, round vs rectangular, and extendable tables. For the indoor rules (chair width, leg room, table height) see our indoor dining table size guide; the same per-person math applies outside.
Outdoor dining table size by number of people
Patio Productions, an outdoor furniture retailer, publishes this rule of thumb in its outdoor dining table size guide: allow about 24 in of table length per person along the sides. Its seat counts:
| Guests | Round | Rectangular | Total footprint with 36 in clearance (our math) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 48 in | 48 in long | About 10 x 10 ft for a 48 in round |
| 6 | 60 in (seats 5 to 6) | 72 in long | About 11 x 11 ft for a 60 in round; about 12 x 9 ft for a 72 x 38 in table |
| 8 | 72 in | 84 to 96 in long | About 13 to 14 ft long by 9 ft wide for a 90 x 40 in table |
The footprint column is our arithmetic: table size plus 36 in on every side. Patio Productions puts a six-person table at roughly a 12 x 12 ft zone.
How much space for a patio dining set
POLYWOOD, which makes outdoor furniture, recommends in its guide to buying an outdoor dining set leaving three feet of clearance on all sides of a dining set. Patio Productions gives more detail:
- 36 in minimum from the table edge to anything fixed, such as a wall, fence, planter or built-in.
- 42 to 48 in on sides where people regularly walk behind seated guests (it cites the NKBA for this range).
- 18 to 24 in can work on a side that backs onto a railing or wall with no foot traffic, if nobody sits on that side.
Outdoors, measure the usable area, not the whole deck. Subtract the path from the back door, the swing of a gate, the grill and its cooking zone, and any steps. On a narrow deck, pushing one long side of a rectangular table toward the railing and seating only the other three sides is often the best use of space. If you plan to put a rug under the set, our area rug size guide covers how far a rug should extend past the chairs.
Round vs rectangular patio table
Round tables suit square patios and groups of 4 to 6. There are no corners to bump on a tight deck, and a center umbrella shades the whole top evenly. The trade-off: past about 60 in, people across the table get far apart, and a 72 in round for 8 needs a large square area.
Rectangular tables suit long, narrow decks and groups of 6 or more. They fit against a railing and scale up by adding length. Shade is harder: one umbrella rarely covers both ends of a long table.
Square tables (around 48 in) are a good 4-seat choice for small square spaces and corners. If you are still weighing benches against chairs for a long table, our dining bench vs chairs guide covers how each affects seating and clearance.
Umbrella size for your patio table
Patio Productions’ patio umbrella size guide says the canopy should extend about two feet past the table edge on every side, which for a round table means the table diameter plus about four feet. Its suggestions include a 9 ft round umbrella for a 48 to 54 in round table, 10 to 11 ft for a 60 to 72 in round, 11 ft round (or about 7 x 10 ft rectangular) for a six-seat rectangular table, and 12 to 13 ft round or two umbrellas for an eight-seat table. No umbrella hole? A cantilever umbrella beside the table is the alternative.
Outdoor dining set for 8: extendable tables
If you host 8 only a few times a year, an extendable table saves space the rest of the time. Patio Productions notes most extendable tables add one leaf of 18 to 24 in, which moves the table up one seating category. Plan clearance around the extended length, not the closed one.
Outdoor dining tables and sets we carry, by size
Sizes below come from each product page. Seat counts marked “our estimate” use the 24 in per person rule, not a maker claim.
| Table or set | Table size | Seats | Our price |
|---|---|---|---|
| LeisureMod Chelsea 5-piece set | 48 in round | 4 chairs included | $1,101 |
| Rove Concepts Winston outdoor table | 48 x 48 in square | 4 (our estimate) | $3,023 |
| LeisureMod Chelsea 7-piece set | 60 in round | 6 chairs included | $1,519 |
| Benzara Ceri acacia table | 59 x 31 in, umbrella hole | 6 (maker claim) | $554.05 |
| Rove Concepts Spencer outdoor table | 63 x 35.5 in | 4 to 6 (our estimate) | $1,217 |
| Rove Concepts Arco outdoor table | 71 x 35.4 in, umbrella grommet | 6 (our estimate) | $1,978 |
| 9-piece extendable acacia set | 63 to 78.75 x 35.5 in, 2 in umbrella hole | 8 armless chairs included | $1,369.99 |
| LeisureMod Chelsea extendable 7-piece set | 78 to 118 in long | 6 chairs included | $1,611 |
| LeisureMod Marlin extendable table | 78 to 118 in long | Table only | $695 |
A few honest notes on fit:
- The Ceri at 59 in is listed by its maker as seating 6. By the 24 in rule it is closer to a comfortable 4, so expect 6 to be snug.
- The 9-piece acacia set comes with 8 armless chairs, each 19 in wide. Four per side need 76 in of edge (our math), so 8 only fits with the table fully extended to 78.75 in, and it is tighter than the 84 to 96 in Patio Productions suggests for 8.
- The LeisureMod Chelsea extendable set and Marlin table list length only. Call us to confirm width and whether there is an umbrella hole before you plan the footprint.
Price check against the makers
LeisureMod lists the three Chelsea sets and the Marlin table at the same prices we charge, and Benzara lists the Ceri at the same $554.05. Rove Concepts lists the Winston ($3,023) and Spencer ($1,217) at the same regular prices as ours, but lists the Arco 71 in at $1,791, below our $1,978. Rove also shows lower prices for its paid members on its own site. We are an authorized Rove Concepts dealer; for chairs to pair with these tables, see our Rove Concepts outdoor furniture guide. All LeisureMod pieces we carry are on our LeisureMod brand page.

Frequently asked questions
What patio table size for 6 people?
A 60 in round table or a rectangular table about 72 in long. Patio Productions puts a 60 in round at 5 to 6 seats and a 72 in rectangle at 6. With 36 in of clearance on every side, that is roughly an 11 x 11 ft or 12 x 9 ft area by our math.
How much space do you need for a patio dining set?
Take the table size and add at least 36 in on every side where chairs pull out, per POLYWOOD and Patio Productions. Use 42 to 48 in where people walk behind seated guests.
What size outdoor dining set seats 8?
A rectangular table 84 to 96 in long, or a 72 in round. An extendable table that opens past 84 in lets you seat 8 without giving up the space every day.
Is a round or rectangular patio table better?
Round is better for 4 to 6 people on a square patio and shades evenly under one umbrella. Rectangular is better for long, narrow decks and for 8 or more.
