Canopy Bed Guide: Ceiling Height, Sizes and Styles

A canopy bed has four tall posts joined at the top by rails, so it frames the mattress like a room within a room and can carry fabric. Before you fall for one, measure your ceiling. The canopy beds we carry stand 81 to 90 inches tall, which leaves 6 to 15 inches under a standard 8 foot ceiling, and most will not fit under a 7 foot ceiling. Here is the height math, the floor space you need, the main styles and what to expect at assembly.

Canopy bed vs four poster bed: what is the difference?

Every canopy bed is a kind of four poster bed, but not every four poster bed has a canopy. Wikipedia describes a four-poster bed as one with a vertical column in each corner that can support a tester (an upper panel) or simply end in bedknobs. A canopy bed is defined by the canopy itself, usually hung with curtains for warmth and privacy.

  • Canopy bed: the posts connect at the top with rails, forming an open box you can leave bare or drape.
  • Four poster bed: tall posts, no top frame. The Benzara Dorie Full Size Poster Bed is an example; its listing notes that canopy posts are sold separately.

Canopy bed ceiling height: do the subtraction first

Subtract the bed’s listed overall height from your ceiling height. A 7 foot ceiling is 84 inches, 8 feet is 96 inches and 9 feet is 108 inches. Here is that math for the beds we carry (our arithmetic, using each listing’s stated height):

Bed Listed height Gap at 7 ft Gap at 8 ft Gap at 9 ft
Rove Concepts Nerva Canopy Bed 90 in Does not fit 6 in 18 in
Benzara Rey Queen Canopy Bed 86 in Does not fit 10 in 22 in
Flores Weathered Mango Eastern King 85 in Does not fit 11 in 23 in
Gray Oak Canopy Bed (Queen or King) 81 in 3 in 15 in 27 in
Benzara Auri Twin Poster Bed 79 in 5 in 17 in 29 in
Benzara Dorie Full Poster Bed 78.15 in 5.85 in 17.85 in 29.85 in

Those numbers are the best case. Before you rely on them, check three things:

  • The lowest point, not the ceiling. Measure to the bottom of any fan blades, light fixture, beam or crown molding over the bed. A ceiling fan can eat the whole gap.
  • Measurement variance. The Nerva listing says its measurements can vary by up to 2 inches, so treat a gap of a few inches as tight.
  • Sloped ceilings. Measure where each post will stand; the lowest corner is what counts.

If your ceiling is low, our bed height guide covers low profile frames and how frame and mattress heights add up.

Room size and walkway space

The Sleep Foundation recommends about 24 inches between each side of the bed and the walls, and up to 36 inches or more for a roomier feel. Adding 24 inches on both sides and at the foot (our math):

  • Gray Oak King (83.5 x 90 in): about 131.5 in wide (10 ft 11.5 in) by 114 in long (9 ft 6 in). The Flores Eastern King is within half an inch of that.
  • Rove Concepts Nerva (72.8 x 88.6 in): about 120.8 in (10 ft 0.8 in) by 112.6 in (9 ft 4.6 in).
  • Benzara Rey Queen (63.25 x 85 in): about 111.25 in (9 ft 3.25 in) by 109 in (9 ft 1 in).

Nightstands and a dresser come on top of that, and corner posts can block a door swing, so check that closet and bedroom doors clear the foot posts. Choosing between king sizes? See our king vs California king guide.

Canopy bed styles we carry

Modern frame with an upholstered headboard

The Rove Concepts Nerva Canopy Bed, Grey Oak Veneer pairs a grey oak veneer canopy frame with a velvet upholstered headboard and champagne colored brass connectors. Its listing notes three preinstalled adjustable slat heights, a European flexible slat system, a mattress inset of about 3 inches and a 440 lb max weight limit. See more on our Rove Concepts brand page.

The Benzara Rey Queen Size Canopy Bed has a slimmer bronze finished frame with four square posts, a floating ivory upholstered headboard and a low footboard, built from MDF, laminated veneer lumber, iron and Asian hardwood.

Classic wood

The Gray Oak canopy bed comes as a Queen or an Eastern King in oak veneer. The listings give a 51 inch headboard, a 22 inch footboard and 7 inches from rail to floor.

Farmhouse mango

The Flores Weathered Mango Eastern King Canopy Bed has an arched canopy frame in mahogany solids and mango veneer, with a padded beige polyester headboard.

Four poster beds for kids’ rooms

The Dorie and the Benzara Auri Twin 4 Poster Princess Bed are arched, traditional four poster designs with no top frame, which keeps them under 80 inches tall.

Draping fabric on a canopy bed

None of these listings give a load rating for the top rails, so keep drapes light. Sheer voile or light linen looks soft and puts less strain on the joints than heavy velvet.

  • Measure from the top rail to the floor for panel length, and decide whether fabric should puddle or stop just short of the floor.
  • Fabric gathered on top of the rails adds bulk overhead, which matters if your ceiling gap is small.
  • Keep fabric well clear of lamps, space heaters and candles.

Assembly, weight and delivery

All of these beds need assembly. Because the bed is built in the room, the boxes, not the finished bed, have to clear your stairs and hallways. The Rey’s listed product weight is 107.83 lbs and the Dorie Full’s is 144 lbs, so plan on two people and a sturdy step ladder for fitting rails at 7 feet or more. The Nerva frame is secured with metal brackets, and the Rey includes three center support legs under its slats.

Check the foundation before buying a mattress set. The Gray Oak and Flores listings say no foundation or box spring is needed, the Dorie says no box spring is required, the Nerva includes its own slat system and the Auri listing says a box spring is required.

Frequently asked questions

What canopy bed ceiling height do you need?

Subtract the bed’s listed height from your ceiling height. Our canopy beds run 81 to 90 inches, so an 8 foot ceiling leaves 6 to 15 inches. Under a 7 foot ceiling, only the 81 inch Gray Oak beds fit, with 3 inches to spare.

Is a four poster bed the same as a canopy bed?

Not quite. A four poster bed has tall corner posts, while a canopy bed connects those posts with a top frame that can hold fabric.

Can a canopy bed work in a small bedroom?

Yes, if the floor and ceiling allow it. The Benzara Rey Queen needs about 111 by 109 inches of floor with 24 inches of walkway on three sides, and a bare frame feels lighter than a draped one.
