Upholstered vs wood bed frame, or metal: which should you buy? Pick upholstered if you read or watch TV in bed and want a soft, padded headboard. Pick wood if you want a frame that is easy to wipe clean, suits almost any style, and is built to stay put for years. Pick metal if you want something light, simple and easy to take apart. Each material has a real tradeoff, and the label on a listing often hides what the frame is actually made of. This guide compares all three on durability, noise, cleaning, allergies and pets, weight, style and price, using beds from our catalog as examples.

| Noise | Padding softens contact points | Quiet when joints stay tight | Can squeak if bolts loosen |

What each frame is really made of
Read the materials line before you compare prices. Many beds mix materials.
- Upholstered beds still have a wood frame inside. The Rove Concepts Ophelia Bed lists a pine wood headboard, California Phase 2 compliant MDF, metal brackets, a European flexible slat system and triple layer foam cushioning. The budget Benzara Viki Queen Platform Bed lists solid wood and plywood under dark gray velvet.
- Wood beds range from solid wood to engineered wood with a printed or veneer surface. The Mallory Smokey Walnut Queen Storage Platform Bed lists mahogany with trembesi and walnut veneers. The Benzara Deana Queen Platform Bed looks like walnut but lists engineered wood and decorative laminate.
- Metal beds are usually powder coated steel or iron tubing with metal slats. Our metal options are limited, and we cover them below.
Durability: which lasts longest?
Solid wood and quality metal both hold up well when the joints stay tight. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished. Veneer takes light touch ups, while laminate is easy to clean but cannot be refinished once it chips.
Upholstered frames wear in a different way. The wood skeleton inside can last a long time, but the fabric is the first thing to show age. A frame with removable covers, like the Rove Concepts Kaye Slipcover Bed, gives you more options as the fabric ages.
For a quick strength check, compare the listed weight limits. The Ophelia lists a max weight limit of 1,100 lb, the Viki and the metal Annie bed each list 650 lbs, and the Rove Concepts Hunter Bed, a wood veneer frame, lists 750 lb.
Noise and squeaks
Most squeaks come from loose bolts, slats rubbing on rails or an uneven floor, not the material alone. Metal frames are the most likely to creak over time as metal joints loosen, and a quick retighten usually fixes it. Wood stays quiet while the joints are snug. Upholstered frames tend to be quietest because padding covers many contact points. Whatever you buy, recheck the hardware a few weeks after assembly.
Upholstered bed pros and cons for cleaning, allergies and pets
Upholstered bed pros
- A padded headboard is comfortable for reading or watching TV.
- Wide fabric choice. The Ophelia listing shows 37 finishes across velvet, linen, boucle, felt, vegan suede and leather options.
Upholstered bed cons
- Fabric collects dust and pet hair and needs regular vacuuming.
- Spills, makeup and hair oil can stain the headboard.
- Cat claws can snag loose weaves like boucle or linen.
If you have dust or pet allergies, a wood or metal frame is easier to keep clean because you can wipe every surface. If you love upholstery anyway, look for removable, washable covers or treated fabric. The Kaye Slipcover Bed lists removable covers for easy cleaning and fabric treated with liquid repellent technology. If allergies are a serious concern, ask your doctor what bedroom changes make sense for you.
Weight, assembly and moving
If you move often or rent, weight matters. Our listings give a useful range. The metal Benzara Annie Queen Platform Bed lists a product weight of 58.5 lbs. The upholstered Viki lists 57.75 lbs. The engineered wood Deana lists 98 lbs. Large upholstered beds can be bulky: the Kaye lists 100 inches wide by 92.9 inches deep, so measure doorways, stairs and the room before you order. Our headboard size guide covers widths and heights by mattress size.

Price: what to expect

- Budget wood look: the Deana Queen at about $417 (engineered wood and laminate).
- Metal: the Annie Queen at about $417.
- Mid range wood with storage: the Mallory Queen at about $1,777.

Who each frame suits
- Upholstered: readers, people who want a statement headboard, and quiet bedrooms. Less ideal with heavy shedding pets unless the covers come off.
- Wood: people who want a long term frame that suits any style, allergy sufferers who want wipe clean surfaces, and families with kids.
- Metal: renters, frequent movers, small rooms, guest rooms, and coastal, industrial or minimal styles.
Whichever you choose, most of these are platform beds with slats, so you may not need a box spring. Our platform bed vs box spring guide explains when you need one. Frequently asked questions
Is an upholstered or wood bed frame better?
Neither is better for everyone. Upholstered is more comfortable to lean on and softer looking. Wood is easier to clean, better with pets and allergies, and solid wood can be refinished. Choose by how you use your bed.
Are upholstered beds bad for allergies?
Fabric can hold dust and pet dander, so upholstered beds need regular vacuuming. Removable, washable covers help. If allergies are severe, a wood or metal frame is simpler to keep clean, and your doctor can give advice for your situation.
Do metal bed frames squeak?
They can over time as bolts loosen. Retightening the hardware every few months usually stops it. Any frame type can squeak if the joints loosen or the floor is uneven.
Is a metal bed frame as strong as wood?
A well built metal frame can be very sturdy. The Annie metal platform bed lists a 650 lbs weight capacity, the same as the solid wood and plywood Viki. Always check the listed weight limit rather than assuming by material.
