The right distance from TV to couch depends mostly on screen size. A good rule: sit where the screen fills roughly 30 to 40 degrees of your field of view. According to the RTINGS size to distance guide, that works out to about 7 feet 5 inches at the 30 degree mark for a 55 inch TV and 8 feet 10 inches for a 65 inch TV, or closer if you want a more cinematic feel. Here is a chart by size, plus how resolution, sofa depth and layout change the number.
TV viewing distance: the two angles that matter
Most sizing advice uses field of view: how wide the screen looks from your seat, as an angle. RTINGS cites the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), which recommends sitting where the screen fills a minimum of 30 degrees of your field of vision for mixed use. RTINGS recommends 40 degrees for a more cinematic experience and calls it generally the safest choice. Aim for somewhere between 30 and 40 degrees.
RTINGS also gives a shortcut: divide your viewing distance in inches by 1.6 to get a TV size that roughly matches 30 degrees (our math: 104 inches divided by 1.6 is a 65 inch TV).
Distance from TV to couch by screen size
The first two columns below come straight from the RTINGS table. The third column applies a different rule of thumb from Castlery’s sofa distance guide: multiply the TV size by 1.2 to 1.5 to get a viewing distance in inches. That range is our math, converted to feet and rounded.
| TV size | 30 degree distance (RTINGS) | 40 degree distance (RTINGS) | 1.2x to 1.5x rule (our math) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43 inch | 5 ft 10 in | 4 ft 4 in | 4.3 to 5.4 ft |
| 50 inch | 6 ft 9 in | 5 ft 0 in | 5.0 to 6.3 ft |
| 55 inch | 7 ft 5 in | 5 ft 6 in | 5.5 to 6.9 ft |
| 65 inch | 8 ft 10 in | 6 ft 6 in | 6.5 to 8.1 ft |
| 75 inch | 10 ft 2 in | 7 ft 6 in | 7.5 to 9.4 ft |
| 85 inch | 11 ft 6 in | 8 ft 6 in | 8.5 to 10.6 ft |
Read the 30 degree column as the far end of a comfortable range and the 40 degree column as the closer, more immersive end. RTINGS notes that at 7 feet, anything from a 50 inch to a 115 inch TV can work, depending on how immersive you want it.
4K vs 1080p: how resolution changes the number
Resolution sets how close you can sit before the picture breaks down. RTINGS explains that sitting close to a 1080p TV can look like watching through a screen door because you start to see individual pixels. 4K packs in so many more pixels that you need to be quite close to a fairly large TV before they become distracting. For a 65 inch TV, RTINGS says that anywhere from about 4 to 8.5 feet is close enough to appreciate the difference between 4K and 1080p.
Castlery says that with a 4K TV you can sit roughly 20 to 30 percent closer than with HD. RTINGS adds that most TVs sold today are 4K, so field of view usually matters more than resolution.
Viewing angle and TV height
The screen also needs to sit at a height that keeps your neck relaxed. Castlery suggests a seat height of around 18 inches keeps your eyes aligned with the center of the screen, which reduces neck tilt. Low lounge sofas put your eyes lower, so a high mount can leave you looking up. Our TV stand size guide covers stand width and how high the screen should sit.
Try to sit as close to straight on as your room allows. On a big sectional, center the TV on the seat you use most.
Why sofa depth changes where your eyes sit
Castlery points out that viewing distance is measured from where your body actually lands, not from the back of the sofa. Deeper seats move your eyes forward, and Castlery notes a 24 inch seat depth can shift your viewing distance by nearly half a foot.
So measure from the screen to where your head rests when you sit back. Compare these Rove Concepts sofas from our listings:
- Rove Concepts Nuvo Sofa: 38.6 in overall depth, 23.6 in seat depth, 16.9 in seat height.
- Rove Concepts Porter Sofa: 38.1 in overall depth, 25 in seat depth, 14.5 in seat height.
- Rove Concepts Milo Sofa: 39.4 in overall depth, 25.2 in seat depth, 17.7 in seat height.
- Rove Concepts Belia Open End Sofa: 39.4 in overall depth, 26.7 in seat depth, 15.7 in seat height.
Against a back wall the overall depths are close, but seat depth decides how far forward you sit. The Porter and Belia also seat you lower than Castlery’s 18 inch guideline, which matters for stand height. For help choosing a seat depth for your height, see our sofa depth guide.
TV size for room: layout tips
- Work backward from the seat. In a fixed room, measure the seat to wall distance first, then pick a screen size. Castlery’s small room tip is to divide that distance in inches by two to find a maximum TV size, so 8 feet (96 inches) points to about a 48 to 50 inch TV and 10 feet points to about 60 inches. RTINGS’s 1.6 rule allows a bigger screen, so treat them as two ends of a range.
- Tape it out. RTINGS suggests mapping the TV’s shape on the wall with painter’s tape to compare sizes from the couch.
- Leave room for recliners. Castlery recommends at least 12 inches of clearance behind a recliner sofa and an extra 24 to 36 inches in front for full extension.
- Match the furniture to the screen. On our listings, the Rove Concepts Noelle TV Stand measures 79.35 in wide by 22.3 in high, the Rove Concepts Augustus TV Stand is 86.6 in wide by 18.7 in high, the Rove Concepts Bennett Media Console 83 inch is 82.6 in wide by 23.5 in high, and the Rove Concepts Athena Media Console is 70.9 in wide by 22 in high. Our media console vs TV stand guide explains the difference between the two.

Frequently asked questions
How far should a couch be from a 55 inch TV?
RTINGS lists about 7 feet 5 inches for a 30 degree field of view and 5 feet 6 inches for 40 degrees.
What is the couch distance for a 65 inch TV?
Roughly 6.5 to 9 feet. RTINGS gives 6 feet 6 inches at 40 degrees and 8 feet 10 inches at 30 degrees. With a 4K set, sitting toward the closer end still looks sharp.
Can I sit closer to a 4K TV than a 1080p TV?
Yes. Castlery says you can sit roughly 20 to 30 percent closer to a 4K screen than an HD one, and RTINGS explains that 4K’s higher pixel density makes pixels much harder to notice up close.
What TV size is right for my room?
Measure your seat to screen distance in inches. Dividing by 1.6 gives the RTINGS 30 degree size, and dividing by 2 gives Castlery’s more conservative small room maximum.
Does sofa depth really matter for TV viewing distance?
It does. Your eyes sit near the backrest, so a deeper seat moves you forward. Castlery notes a 24 inch seat depth can shift viewing distance by nearly half a foot.
