Electric Fireplace Installation Mistakes to Avoid

Most electric fireplace installation mistakes happen before the unit ever comes out of the box: a rough opening framed to a guess instead of the manual, a heater outlet blocked by trim or a TV, a mantel set too close, or a fireplace plugged into a shared circuit or an extension cord. All of them are avoidable if you read the manual for your exact model and plan the wall around it. Below are twelve common mistakes, with real numbers from Amantii’s manuals showing how much requirements change between models.

Permits are a separate question, covered in our electric fireplace permit guide. Anything involving a new circuit, hardwiring or 240V belongs to a licensed electrician, and your local code has the final word.

Why electric fireplace installation mistakes happen

Electric Fireplaces Depot’s article Electric Fireplace Install Mistakes Custom Builders Make says electric fireplaces are still misunderstood as “plug-and-play” products, and that assumption is where most problems start. Its fix: confirm the exact unit and its clearances before framing, and spec the circuit before the electrician roughs in. The list below breaks that into specific errors.

Electric fireplace framing mistakes

1. Framing to the wrong rough opening

Every model has its own opening, and the differences are not small. Amantii’s Symmetry Lumina manual lists a wall opening of 43 1/4 x 15 3/4 x 6 1/2 in for the 42 inch model. The Panorama BI-SLIM manual calls for 50 x 25 x 7 in for the 50 inch model. The Zero Clearance (ZECL) manual gives 27 1/8 x 22 3/4 x 9 3/4 in for the ZECL-26-2923. Frame to the manual for the unit you bought.

2. Assuming it fits a 2×4 wall

A 2×4 stud cavity is about 3 1/2 in deep. All three openings above are deeper than that, so they need a 2×6 wall, a bump-out or a media wall. Units like the Symmetry XtraSlim are marketed for 2×4 walls. Our recessed electric fireplace installation guide covers wall depth in detail.

3. No gap around the unit

The Symmetry Lumina manual says to leave at least 1/4 in around the edge of the appliance in the framed opening. The ZECL manual requires a minimum of 1 in to the sides and back and 3/8 in to the top when built in, to any material.

Clearance and heat mistakes

4. Mantel too close

Mantel clearance is model specific. The Panorama BI-SLIM manual calls for a 4 in minimum, measured from the trim. Amantii’s Symmetry XT manual asks for 1/2 in minimum. The ZECL manual asks for 2 in from the top of the appliance to a mantel up to 12 in deep. Electric Fireplaces Depot cites the ZECL figures; they do not apply to every Amantii.

5. Blocking the heater outlet or air intakes

The Symmetry Lumina manual says never to obstruct or cover the fan outlet and not to block air intakes in any manner. The ZECL manual says the grills on the front and back of the appliance cannot be covered in any way. Per our listings, the Symmetry Basic vents from the front top, the WM-FM 50 vents through small openings in the bottom of its glass surround, and the Sierra Flame 40 vents from the lower front of its steel frame.

6. Ignoring wall finish and heat ratings

The ZECL manual says any paint or lacquer above the insert must be heat resistant to prevent discoloration. The Panorama BI-SLIM manual allows tile or stone to the glass edge, but with the supplied trim the finished wall can be no thicker than 1 in. For material ideas that work around a unit, see our electric fireplace accent wall ideas.

7. Mounting the TV too close or too hot

The Amantii manuals we read set no specific TV clearance. Treat a TV like a mantel: keep it out of the heater’s airflow, use your model’s mantel clearance as a minimum, and check the TV maker’s temperature limits. Some models, including the Symmetry XtraSlim, let you run the flame with the heater off.

8. Wrong mounting height and placement

Amantii’s manuals say to avoid damp spots, stay at least 3 ft from combustibles such as curtains and furniture, and keep direct sunlight off the screen. The Symmetry Lumina wall mount diagram shows 2 in of clearance around the unit.

Electric fireplace wiring mistakes

9. Sharing a circuit or using an extension cord

The Symmetry Lumina manual requires a 15 amp, 120 V grounded branch circuit, prefers a dedicated circuit, says not to share the socket, and forbids extension cords and power strips. Its spec sheet rates the 42 inch model at 1500 W and 12.5 A. Manuals vary, so follow yours.

10. Hardwire versus plug confusion

Many Amantii units ship with a cord and are hardwire ready; the manuals say a qualified electrician must do the hardwiring per local code. Some larger units add a 240V option: the Symmetry XT manual lists 240 V at 2400 W on 14 gauge wire with a 20 amp fuse, for the 60 inch and larger XT models only. Decide before the wall closes. The Lumina manual says the socket should be adjacent to, but not above, the heater.

11. No access for service

The Panorama BI-SLIM manual’s service log says the heater must be serviced annually depending on usage, and its hardwire connection sits behind a cover plate on the left side. The Lumina’s junction block is on the back top right. Plan access that does not mean tearing out tile.

12. Not testing before you finish the wall

The Amantii manuals we read say to plug the unit into a grounded 120 V outlet and test it before installing. The BI-SLIM manual adds a second check after mounting and before you add drywall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common electric fireplace installation mistake?

Framing before confirming the exact model. Electric Fireplaces Depot names enclosure sizing the most common source of installation failure.

What electric fireplace framing dimensions should I use?

The ones in your model’s manual or spec sheet. Amantii’s openings range from about 6 1/2 in deep for the Symmetry Lumina to 9 3/4 in for the ZECL-26-2923.

What are the worst electric fireplace wiring mistakes?

Sharing a circuit, using an extension cord or power strip, misplacing the outlet, and closing the wall before deciding on hardwire or 240V. A licensed electrician should handle any new circuit.

Can I put a TV above an electric fireplace?

Often, if the heater does not vent into it and you keep at least the mantel clearance. Confirm your TV’s temperature limits.
