How much ice per person do you need for a party? Plan on 1 to 2 pounds of ice per guest for a typical gathering, and closer to 2 pounds when the same ice has to fill glasses and chill drinks in coolers. Hot days, long parties and heavy cocktail service can push that higher. Below: where those numbers come from, worked examples, and how far a home ice maker really goes.

How much ice per person: what the sources say
- Reddy Ice, a packaged ice producer, recommends 1 to 2 pounds of ice per person in its party guide (reddyice.com, “How Much Ice You Need for a Party”) and on its ice calculator page. It says to adjust for the event, indoor or outdoor, and whether ice is served, used for chilling, or both.
- Reviewed, a product testing site, says the party calculators it looked at average out to about 2 pounds per guest. Its own estimate, based on 7 ounces of ice per cup and three drinks an hour over a three hour party, came to about 4 pounds per guest (Reviewed, “How much ice do you need for a party”).
So the sources disagree: about 1 pound per guest for a short, light event, about 2 pounds for most parties, and up to roughly 4 pounds for steady drinking over hours. Reddy Ice’s own worked examples land near the top of its range: its calculator suggested 15 seven pound bags (105 pounds) for a 50 guest outdoor BBQ where the ice only chills drinks, and 22 seven pound bags (154 pounds) for a 75 guest indoor party with ice for both chilling and serving.
Ice for drinks vs chilling
Ice for drinks
Ice in glasses depends on drinks per guest. Reviewed’s 7 ounce figure is a little under half a pound per drink: multiply guests by drinks by 7 ounces, then divide by 16 for pounds.
How much ice for a cooler
Both Reddy Ice and Reviewed give the same rule for coolers: about twice as much ice as contents, a 2 to 1 ratio. If the cans or bottles fill a quarter of the cooler, ice should fill about half of it.
If you are also keeping food cold, follow the FDA rather than a party rule of thumb. The FDA’s guidance on eating outdoors says cold perishable food should stay in a cooler at 40°F or below until serving, should not sit out more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F) and suggests separate coolers for drinks and perishable food so the food cooler is opened less.
Ice for a party: worked examples
These are our own estimates, computed from the rules cited above.
| Scenario | Rule used | Estimated ice |
|---|---|---|
| 12 guests, indoor dinner, ice in glasses only | Reddy Ice, 1 to 2 lb per person | 12 to 24 lb |
| 30 guests, 4 hours, drinks plus chilling | Reddy Ice, 2 lb per person (top of range) | 60 lb, about nine 7 lb bags |
| 30 guests, 4 hours, 1 drink per hour each, glasses only | Reviewed, 7 oz of ice per drink | 120 drinks x 7 oz = 840 oz, about 53 lb |
| 30 guests, hot afternoon, steady drinking for 3 hours | Reviewed, about 4 lb per guest | About 120 lb |
Notice how the 30 guest party ranges from 53 to 120 pounds depending on the assumptions. For a typical 4 hour party, we would start at 2 pounds per guest and add cooler ice by the 2 to 1 rule if coolers hold many drinks.
Pounds of ice per guest: how far a home ice maker goes
A daily rating covers 24 hours. During a party you can serve the ice already in the bin plus what the machine makes while guests are there. This table uses each listing’s production and storage figures and the 2 pounds per guest rule, assuming a full bin at the start and even production. These are our estimates, not manufacturer figures.
| Ice maker | Listed lb per day | Listed storage | Guests a full day covers at 2 lb | Ice for a 4 hour party (storage plus 4 hours) | Guests that covers at 2 lb |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marvel 15 in crescent ice machine, $3,469 | 25 lb | 25 lb | 12 | About 29 lb | 14 |
| Marvel 15 in clear ice machine, outdoor rated, $4,519 | 34 lb | 35 lb | 17 | About 41 lb | 20 |
| Manitowoc UDP0065A undercounter, $2,319 | 48 lb at 90°F/70°F (62 lb at 70°F/50°F) | 31 lb | 24 | About 39 lb | 19 |
| U-Line 15 in nugget ice machine, $4,989 | 65 lb | 27 lb | 32 | About 38 lb | 18 |
| Undercounter built-in nugget ice maker, $1,228.99 | 66 lb | 18 lb | 33 | About 29 lb | 14 |
| Viking Professional 15 in nugget ice machine, $6,399 | 80 lb | 26 lb | 40 | About 39 lb | 19 |
| Manitowoc UNP0200A nugget undercounter, $4,818 | 164 lb at 90°F/70°F (213 lb at 70°F/50°F) | 20 lb | 82 | About 47 lb | 23 |
During a 4 hour party most of these serve roughly 14 to 23 guests, because the bin does most of the work. The daily rating matters more if you run the machine a day or two ahead and freeze the extra in bags. For Manitowoc we used the more conservative 90°F/70°F rating.
Holding ice and drinks outside
If you already have ice and just need somewhere to keep it by the grill, a drop-in bin is simpler than a second machine. The Lynx Sedona 18 in drop-in ice bin cooler ($989) is insulated stainless steel with 1.7 cubic feet of capacity and a bottom drain.
Choosing a machine for hosting
- Count bin storage first. For one evening, a bigger bin beats a higher daily rating.
- Pick the ice type your guests will notice. Our nugget vs cube vs flake comparison explains texture and melt.
- Look at drains and outdoor ratings. The Marvel crescent model needs no drain; the U-Line and Viking models list a factory-installed drain pump. For plumbing and electrical work, local code and a licensed pro have the final word.

Frequently asked questions
How much ice per person for a party?
Reddy Ice recommends 1 to 2 pounds per person. Reviewed found that party calculators average about 2 pounds, and its own estimate for steady drinking over three hours was about 4 pounds. Start at 2 pounds and go higher for hot or long events.
How many pounds of ice per guest for drinks and coolers?
If one supply fills glasses and chills drinks, plan near 2 pounds per guest, then add cooler ice at about twice the volume of the contents.
How much ice for a cooler?
Use about two parts ice to one part contents. Keep perishable food in its own cooler at 40°F or below, as the FDA advises.
Can a home ice maker supply a whole party?
Usually only a small one. By our estimate, most of the machines above cover roughly 14 to 23 guests over a 4 hour party at 2 pounds each. For bigger events, bank ice ahead or top up with packaged ice.
