How much space does a massage chair need? Three numbers
- Reclined length. Backrest to leg rest tip, fully reclined. This decides whether the chair fits the room.
- Width. Kahuna lists two widths for some chairs: before assembly (for doorways) and after.
- Rear clearance. On a standard recline design, the backrest travels backward as the chair tips into zero gravity. Kahuna’s product page diagrams for the Dios-7300 and Dios-1288 mark about 3 in between the upright back and the reclined back position.
Kahuna states no minimum wall clearance on the pages and spec sheets we opened. Our working rule (an assumption, not a manufacturer spec) is reclined length plus about 6 in, so a cord or curtain is not caught behind the chair.

Caution: the diagrams on Kahuna’s product pages do not always match the spec sheets: the Dios-7300 page diagram shows 53 in standing and 67 in reclined, and the Dios-1288 page diagram shows 59 in standing, 79 in reclined and 32 in wide. Plan for the larger number. Our 7D and 8D listings also show heavier net weights (250 lb and 352 lb) than Kahuna’s sheets; use the heavier figure for stairs and floors.
Massage chair clearance from wall
On a standard recline chair, a 52 in chair can need 67 to 79 in of floor once reclined. Most of the extra goes forward as the leg rest rises, but some goes backward: the roughly 3 in on Kahuna’s diagrams.
- Check what sits behind the reclined headrest: window sills, radiators, shelves, wall art.
- Keep the leg rest path clear: auto foot extension adds length (6 in on the Dios-1288, per Kahuna).
Space saving massage chair vs regular recline
“Wall hugger” and “space saving” describe chairs whose seat slides forward as the back reclines, so the backrest needs little room behind it. The trade is floor space in front. Ask for the reclined length and rear clearance before assuming a space saving chair needs less total floor.
The Dios-6800, 7300 and 1288 sheets list about 120 to 160 degrees of recline and no slide-forward mechanism, so plan them as standard recline chairs.
Compact chairs: the Hani models
Kahuna sells the Dios Hani as a space saving compact chair: a 52 in SL track, a 122 degree recline and a separate ottoman, per Kahuna’s product page. Kahuna does not publish its dimensions in text. Kahuna sells it for $1,799; our Dios Hani listing is $2,899 today, so buying direct from Kahuna currently costs less. Our listings for the older Hani-3800 (46 x 28 x 47 in) and Hani3200 (43.3 x 28 x 41.4 in) do publish dimensions, and both list a maximum length well under the 67 in or more of a full body chair reclined.
Measure the delivery path, not just the room
Kahuna lists its Dios chairs as semi assembled, and the spec sheets show narrower widths before assembly: 20 in for the Dios-6800 and 26 in for the Dios-1288. Box sizes are not published, so ask before ordering. Check:
- The narrowest door on the route, measured at the stops, not the frame.
- Tight stair turns and landings. Shipping weights run 209 to 333 lb on the sheets above (more on some of our listings), which means two or more people on stairs.

Floor load and power outlet
Our math for the heaviest example: Dios-1288 at 266 lb plus its 265 lb maximum user weight is 531 lb on a base of roughly 34 x 52 in (about 12.3 sq ft), or about 43 lb per square foot. For an upper floor in an older house or a bouncy floor, ask a contractor.
Power: the spec sheets list 150W (Dios-6800), 200W (Dios-7300) and 180W (Dios-1288); our listings show up to 230W for several models. Our math: 230W at 120V is under 2 amps, so a normal household outlet is enough. Place the chair near an outlet so the cord does not cross the walkway; cord length is not published, so ask.
Worked room examples (our math)
All three use reclined length plus our 6 in planning buffer.
- 10 x 12 ft bedroom, chair facing out from the short wall. Dios-7300: 74 in plus 6 in is 80 in of the 120 in depth, leaving 40 in in front to walk past. Using the 79 in figure from the Dios-1288 page diagram leaves 35 in.
- Apartment nook, 7 ft deep by 6 ft wide (84 x 72 in). Dios-6800: 67 in plus 6 in is 73 in, with 11 in spare. Its 30 in width leaves 42 in beside it for a side table. The Dios-1288 (76 to 79 in reclined, plus 6 in) needs 82 to 85 in: too tight.
- 5 ft reading corner (60 in). A full body chair does not fit reclined. A compact chair such as the Hani-3800 (46 in listed length) does, with 14 in spare, before you add the ottoman.
