How to Clean Boucle: Care, Pets and Durability

If you are figuring out how to clean boucle, the short version is: vacuum it often, blot spills instead of rubbing, follow the cleaning code on the tag, and never pull a loose loop. This guide covers routine care, spot cleaning by code, snags, pets and how durable boucle really is, with a short table of boucle chairs and sofas we carry.

What boucle is (and why fiber content matters)

Boucle is a looped yarn, or the fabric woven from it. According to Wikipedia’s entry on boucle, the yarn is made by combining at least two strands at different tensions: one forms the loops and the other anchors them. Those raised loops are why it needs gentler handling than a flat weave.

Boucle can be made from wool, synthetics or blends, so “boucle” alone does not tell you how to clean it. For example, Rove Concepts lists its Chatou Boucle as 85% polyester and 15% acrylic on its product care page, while Rove also offers a separate Classic Boucle Wool on some pieces. Synthetic boucle generally tolerates spot cleaning better, while wool deserves extra caution with heat and moisture. Check the fiber content and care tag before you use any cleaner.

How to clean boucle: routine care

Most boucle care is preventive:

  • Vacuum weekly with an upholstery brush. Use low suction and the soft brush attachment, moving with the direction of the loops. Rove’s care page advises vacuuming regularly with an upholstery attachment, including between cushions and casings.
  • Rotate and fluff cushions. Flipping and rotating removable cushions spreads wear evenly, which matters on textured fabric where the favorite seat flattens first.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight. Rove notes that direct sun causes fading, and that natural fibers and dark fabrics are most susceptible.
  • Schedule a professional clean. For Chatou Boucle, Rove recommends regular vacuuming plus an annual professional cleaning.

If you own a Rove sofa, our guide to cleaning a Rove Concepts couch walks through each Rove fabric by name, so we will not repeat those details here.

Spot cleaning boucle by cleaning code

Most upholstered furniture carries a cleaning code on the tag or in the product documentation. Sailrite’s guide Understanding Upholstery Fabric Cleaning Codes defines them this way:

Code What it means What to use on boucle
W Water-based cleaner is OK Water-based upholstery shampoo or foam, applied sparingly
S Solvent only A water-free solvent or dry-cleaning product; no water
W/S Either type Upholstery shampoo, foam from a mild detergent, or a mild dry-cleaning solvent
X Vacuum or brush only No water or solvent cleaners; call a professional for stains

Whatever the code, the method is the same:

  1. Blot the spill right away with a clean, dry, white cloth. Press, do not rub.
  2. Test your cleaner on a hidden spot (the back or underside) and let it dry before judging.
  3. Apply a small amount of cleaner to the cloth, not directly to the fabric, and dab from the outside of the stain inward.
  4. Blot with a cloth dampened with cool, clean water if your code allows water, then blot dry.
  5. Let it air dry, then brush the loops gently with a soft brush to lift them.

Sailrite also recommends calling a professional upholstery cleaner if you are unsure how to proceed. Rove says the same for large or stubborn stains on its boucle.

What not to do

  • Do not rub or scrub. Friction frays and flattens loops and can spread the stain.
  • Do not use hot water. Heat and agitation are risky for wool, and hot water can set some stains.
  • Do not soak the fabric. Over-wetting can leave water rings and soak the cushion underneath.
  • Do not machine wash covers unless the manufacturer specifically says you can.

Snags: trim, never pull

Pulled loops are a typical cosmetic issue with any looped fabric. If a loop sticks out, do not pull it, since that can draw up more yarn and pucker the fabric. Instead, push the loop back to the underside with a blunt needle if you can, or snip it level with the surrounding loops using small, sharp scissors. Belts, jewelry and zippers catch loops easily.

Boucle for pets: an honest take

Boucle for pets is a mixed bag. The loops can catch on claws, so a cat that kneads or a dog that digs at the cushions can pull loops over time. On the plus side, the textured surface can hide some hair and minor wear better than a smooth fabric, and pet hair lifts off easily with an upholstery brush or a rubber pet brush.

If you have pets, keep nails trimmed, put a throw on the spot your pet favors, and choose a synthetic boucle with a cleanable code (W or W/S) so accidents are easier to handle. A tight, small loop gives claws less to hook than a large, open curl.

Is boucle durable?

Durability depends on the specific fabric, not the name. The usual measure is abrasion resistance. In the Wyzenbeek test, Sailrite explains in What Is a Fabric Wear Rating?, a piece of cotton duck is passed back and forth over the fabric, and each back and forth motion is one double rub. The test runs until the fabric shows noticeable wear or two yarn breaks. Sailrite lists 30,000 or more double rubs as heavy duty for residential use. For contract upholstery, the Association for Contract Textiles guidelines cited by Brentano call for 15,000 double rubs for general use and 30,000 for heavy duty.

For reference, Rove lists its Chatou Boucle at more than 100,000 double rubs. Keep in mind that a rub count measures abrasion, not snagging, so a high number does not make any boucle claw-proof.

Frequently asked questions

Can you steam clean boucle?

Only if your manufacturer approves it. Steam adds heat and moisture, which is risky for wool boucle and wrong for S or X coded fabrics.

Is boucle durable enough for everyday use?

It can be. Look for a published double rub count; Sailrite treats 30,000 or more as heavy duty for homes. Remember that abrasion ratings do not measure snag resistance.

Is boucle good for pets?

Boucle for pets works best with calm animals and trimmed nails. Claws can catch loops, so choose a tight, small loop and a cleanable code if pets share the furniture.

How do I fix a pulled loop on a boucle chair?

Do not pull it. Push it to the underside with a blunt needle or trim it level with small scissors.
