Rove Concepts vs Knoll Womb Chair
The original Womb Chair is made by Knoll. Knoll’s Womb Chair page says Eero Saarinen designed it in response to Florence Knoll’s challenge for an enveloping chair, and that Knoll manufactures it to the original specifications. Here is how the two compare on the published specs.
| Spec | Rove Concepts | Knoll Womb Chair, Standard |

Knoll prices are the starting prices shown on its Womb Chair with Ottoman and Womb Ottoman pages (ottoman alone $2,191); upholstery choices change the price.
What the comparison shows:
- Price is the big gap. The Rove set costs roughly a fifth of Knoll’s chair-and-ottoman price.
- Size is close but not identical. Rove lists the chair 3.5 in taller than Knoll’s Standard. Rove does not publish seat height or seat depth, so if those matter, ask us to confirm before ordering.
- Rove lists a higher weight limit (440 lb vs 275 lb). Both are each maker’s own figures.
- Knoll offers a Medium size with a shorter seat depth for smaller people; Rove sells one size.
- Authenticity and resale. Knoll’s page says the chair is an original, authentic Knoll product. A reproduction does not carry that, and that matters if you see the chair as a collectible.
Comfort: how the Womb Chair sits
The Womb Chair is a lounge chair, not an upright reading chair. Rove describes it as letting you lounge, sit upright or slouch, with indented armrests and movable cushions, and says its sense of security comes from the shape of the shell rather than its cushioning. Knoll’s page makes the same point about accepting all postures. In practice that means:
- It suits curling up, reading with legs on the ottoman, or sitting sideways over an arm.
- It is wide (39 in on Rove’s version), so plan the floor space. With the ottoman in front, allow a footprint of roughly 3.5 by 5 ft or more.
- Shorter sitters may find a deep seat leaves their feet off the floor; Knoll’s Medium, with an 18 in seat depth, exists for that reason. If you are on the shorter side, sit in a Womb Chair somewhere before you buy either version, or call us to talk through the fit.
If seat depth is your main concern on any Rove upholstery, our article on whether Rove Concepts couches are comfortable explains how Rove publishes depth and firmness.
Womb chair and ottoman fabrics
Our listing offers Chatou Boucle (Pearl, Caviar), Plush Velvet (Solstice, Moonstone, Cloud), Modern Felt Alesund, Venice Vegan Suede (Chiffon, Latte, Strato), Shearling (Almond, Espresso), Premium Cashmere Wool Pearl, and custom fabric by quote, with prices from $1,897 to $2,031 depending on fabric. The listing text mentions 78 finishes across more fabric families, including leathers; if you want one that is not in the selector, call us and we will check availability with Rove.
Lead times differ by fabric: Rove’s FAQ lists in-stock orders at about 1 to 4 business days of processing plus 1 to 3 weeks transit, while custom orders run about 14 to 20 weeks.
Buying from us vs Rove directly
Our price of $1,897 matches Rove’s current sale price; Rove’s regular price is $1,959. Rove members pay less: Rove’s page showed a member price of $1,138 when we checked. If you are already a member, or buying enough Rove pieces to justify a membership, Rove direct will cost less. Our breakdown of whether a Rove Concepts membership is worth it runs the math.
Rove’s store policy lists flat-rate standard shipping of $159 on orders up to $5,000 retail, with 1 to 3 weeks estimated transit, and White Glove service that includes a delivery appointment, inside placement up to one flight of stairs, assembly and packaging removal. Its refund policy requires returns to reach Rove’s warehouse within 30 days of delivery, does not refund the original shipping charges, and excludes custom orders and Final Sale items.
With us, the Womb Chair set alone clears our $999 threshold, so it ships free by freight in the contiguous U.S. White-glove and room-of-choice delivery are available on request, and returns follow our return and refund policy. What to pair with it
A small round table beside the chair keeps a drink or book in reach without crowding the ottoman. The Tulip Side Table ($419) is another mid-century reproduction and matches the Womb Chair’s era; the Orb Side Table ($349) in walnut acacia is a warmer option. If you are comparing other Rove lounge chairs, the Nova Lounge Chair Swivel ($1,161) and the Flag Halyard Chair and Ottoman ($4,269) sit at either side of the Womb on price. For another classic reproduction, our Rove Concepts Wishbone Chair review uses the same replica-vs-original approach. Browse everything on our Rove Concepts brand page.
Who should buy which
- Buy the Rove version if you want the Womb Chair’s look and posture at a fraction of the price, want a higher listed weight limit, and do not need the Knoll name.
- Buy the Knoll original if authenticity, resale value, a choice of Standard or Medium sizes, or Knoll’s upholstery range matter more than price.
