How to Measure for a Recliner and Wall Clearance

Here is how to measure for a recliner in one sentence: measure yourself first (seat height, seat depth and back height that suit your body), then measure the floor from the wall out to where the footrest lands when the chair is fully reclined, and finally measure every doorway on the delivery route. This guide walks through each step using real listing dimensions from chairs we carry.

If you are still deciding between a lever and a motor, or want the basics of wall hugger designs, our power recliner vs manual recliner guide covers wall clearance by design type. This article goes deeper on the measuring itself.

Recliner dimensions to know before you start

Castlery’s guide on how to measure for a recliner chair gives typical numbers for a standard armchair recliner: 33 to 36 inches wide, 35 to 39 inches deep upright, and 40 to 42 inches tall. Five numbers matter for planning:

  • Overall width: arm to arm, the widest point.
  • Upright depth: front to back while seated upright.
  • Fully reclined length: back of the reclined backrest to the tip of the footrest.
  • Wall clearance: the gap the chair needs behind it to recline.
  • Height: floor to top of the back, which matters under windows or shelves.

How to measure for a recliner that fits your body

Before you shop, sit in a chair you find comfortable and take these measurements.

Seat height

Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. A good fit lets your feet rest flat on the floor with your knees roughly level with your hips. Taller sitters, or anyone who finds standing up hard, usually prefer a higher seat. On our listings, seat heights run from 18.5 inches on the Benzara Teren to 21 inches on the Benzara Skio. If standing up is difficult, ask your doctor whether a power lift chair suits you.

Seat depth

Measure from the front edge of the seat to the backrest. You want the backs of your knees a couple of fingers clear of the front edge while your back touches the backrest. The chairs below list seat depths from 20 to 22 inches. Shorter sitters may want the shallow end of that range, and taller sitters the deep end.

Seat width

Measure the space between the arms, not the overall width. If you like to tuck a leg up, look for more room. The Benzara Skio and Andie both list a 22 inch seat width, while the Benzara Lete lists 20 inches.

Back height vs your height

Sit upright against a wall and measure from the seat to the top of your head. When you recline, your head should land on the headrest pillow rather than above it. Taller people should favor a taller back and a longer reclined length. Few listings state back height, so use overall height minus seat height as a rough guide.

How to measure the room: upright vs fully reclined

Follow these steps with painter’s tape on the floor.

  1. Tape a line out from the wall equal to the listed wall clearance. That marks where the back of the chair sits upright.
  2. Tape the upright footprint (width by upright depth) in front of that line.
  3. Extend a second box from the wall clearance line out to the fully reclined length. That is the floor the chair claims every time you lean back.
  4. Add walkway space in front of the reclined footrest. Castlery recommends 30 to 36 inches of clearance for walkways when the chair is reclined.
  5. Check side room for a side table and to reach the handle or button.

Worked example: Benzara Skio rocker recliner

The Benzara Skio Manual Rocker Recliner lists 35 inches wide, 42 inches long, 41 inches high, a 65 inch fully reclined length and 12 inches between the recliner and the wall. Our math:

  • Upright: 12 inches of clearance plus 42 inches of depth is 54 inches from the wall.
  • Fully reclined: 12 plus 65 is 77 inches from the wall to the tip of the footrest.
  • With a 30 to 36 inch walkway in front: 107 to 113 inches, or roughly 9 to 9.5 feet from the wall.

Compare that with a design that needs almost no wall gap. The Modern Power Recliner Sofa with zero wall design lists a 59 inch fully reclined length and 0 inches of required back clearance, so it needs about 59 inches from the wall before you add a walkway.

Recliner dimensions compared

Dimensions below come from our product listings, in inches, with prices as listed on October 17, 2026. Many Benzara listings give length and width with the labels swapped between the Features and Specifications sections. We used the Features section and treated “L” as front to back depth, since that matches the reclined numbers.

Benzara Skio Manual Rocker 35 42 41 65 12 $707.38
Benzara Lete Manual Rocker 32 39 40 64 12 $724.86

The Rix swivels a full 360 degrees, so give it room to turn as well as recline. Our swivel chair buying guide covers swivel recliners and gliders. You can browse more chairs in our Benzara collection.

Walkways, doorways and delivery

Once the chair fits the spot, make sure it can get there. The Skio, Lete and Vely listings each state a minimum doorway width of 32 inches for delivery, and the Modern Power Recliner Sofa lists 34 inches. Measure every door, hallway and stair turn on the route. The Mey and Rix listings note removable seat backs, which can help in a tight spot. Our guide on whether a couch will fit through your door covers the method.

Outlet planning for a power recliner

A power recliner needs a nearby outlet, so mark it on your floor plan before you order. The Andie listing includes a UL listed power cord and a USB port, and the Modern Power Recliner Sofa lists USB-A and USB-C ports in the arms. Before you commit to a spot:

  • Note which side of the chair the cord exits and whether it would cross a walkway.
  • If there is no outlet nearby, a licensed electrician can tell you about adding one; local code has the final word.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do you need behind a recliner?

It depends on the model, so check the listing. Standard recliners we carry list 12 inches, while the Teren and Mey list 2 inches and the zero wall power sofa lists 0.

What is recliner clearance, and how do I measure it?

Recliner clearance is the wall gap plus the fully reclined length, plus a walkway. For the Skio that is 12 plus 65, or 77 inches, before you add 30 to 36 inches to walk past.

Is a wall hugger recliner smaller?

Not always. A wall hugger recliner saves space behind the chair, but its reclined length can be similar. The Mey still reaches 64 inches fully reclined.

What recliner dimensions suit a tall person?

Look for a seat depth near 22 inches, an overall height around 41 inches or more and a long reclined length, such as the Skio at 65 inches.
