Elongated vs Round Toilet: Size, Fit and Comfort

In the elongated vs round toilet debate, the short answer is this: an elongated bowl is longer and oval, which most adults find more comfortable, while a round bowl is shorter and fits tighter bathrooms. Ferguson’s toilet seat buying guide puts the difference at about 2 inches, measured from the seat bolt holes to the front of the bowl: roughly 16.5 inches for round and 18.5 inches for elongated. Those 2 inches matter in small rooms, near a door swing, and when you buy a seat. For tank styles, see our one piece vs two piece toilet guide, and confirm your drain distance with our toilet rough in size guide before you order.

Toilet bowl shape: what elongated and round actually mean

Bowl shape describes the opening and rim you sit on, not the tank. Both shapes come in one piece, two piece, skirted and wall hung designs.

  • Round: a nearly circular rim. Ferguson describes round seats as the most common type and lists them at 16.5 inches long.
  • Elongated: an oval rim that extends further forward. Ferguson lists elongated seats at 18.5 inches long and notes they often cost a bit more.
  • Compact elongated: an oval seating area on a shorter overall body, covered below.
  • Square: a less common modern shape. Our Concorde smart toilet listing describes a square bowl that “maximizes space by providing additional seat area.”

Bowl length is not overall depth. Overall depth runs from the wall behind the tank to the front of the bowl, so for a tight room compare that figure on the spec sheet, not just the shape label.

Elongated vs round toilet comfort

Most adults find an elongated bowl more comfortable because the longer oval gives more support under the thighs. Ferguson says elongated seats are considered more comfortable by many users, but adds that this varies from person to person.

Seat height matters too. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design set seat height at 17 to 19 inches for accessible water closets, with an exception allowing 15 to 19 inches in residential dwelling units. Shape does not change that number. If you are choosing for a medical or mobility need, check with your doctor or therapist.

Small bathroom space, door swing and front clearance

An elongated bowl projects roughly 2 inches further into the room. In a powder room or a room where the door swings toward the toilet, that can decide whether the door clears your knees. To check before you buy:

  1. Measure from the finished wall behind the toilet to the nearest obstruction in front of it: the door at its widest swing, a vanity, a tub edge or the opposite wall.
  2. Subtract the overall depth listed on the new toilet’s spec sheet.
  3. What is left is your clear space in front of the bowl. Compare it with your local code minimum.

Residential front clearance minimums vary by jurisdiction, so check with your building department or a licensed plumber. For accessible design, the ADA Standards require clearance around a water closet of at least 60 inches measured from the side wall and 56 inches measured from the rear wall, and say doors shall not swing into the clear floor space or clearance required for any fixture, with limited exceptions for single user rooms. Those rules are a useful benchmark if you are planning for a wheelchair or walker.

In a very tight room, a reversed door swing, a pocket door or a wall hung toilet with an in wall tank can win back more space than switching bowl shape alone.

Compact elongated toilet: the middle ground

A compact elongated toilet keeps the oval seating area but shortens the overall body, usually by tucking the tank closer to the wall. WoodBridge describes the bowl on its T-0042 and T-0045 as a “compact elongated bowl” that “offers added comfort while occupying the same space as a round-front bowl.” That is a manufacturer claim, so confirm overall depth on the spec sheet against your measurements.

Toilet seat size and replacement seats

Seat size has to match bowl shape. An elongated seat on a round bowl overhangs the front; a round seat on an elongated bowl leaves the rim exposed and can shift. Ferguson’s method for checking which one you have:

  1. Use a tape measure at least 20 inches long.
  2. Find the two holes where the seat bolts to the toilet.
  3. Measure straight down the center from the bolt holes to the front edge of the bowl.
  4. About 16.5 inches means round; about 18.5 inches means elongated.

Also measure the width of the bowl at its widest point and the spacing between the bolt holes, then compare them with the seat’s spec sheet. Bidet seats also have to clear the tank. ANZZI lists an adjustable seat screw distance of 5.12 to 8.27 inches on its Dive and Shore bidet seats, and the Hal Series non-electric bidet seat comes in separate versions: TL-MBSEL200WH for elongated toilets and TL-MBSRN201WH for round ones. Square bowls usually need a model specific seat.

Kids, guests and cleaning

Round bowls suit small children well because the opening is shorter, and they are common in kids’ bathrooms and powder rooms. WoodBridge lists its T0031-CH compact toilet as “perfect for powder rooms and kids bathroom.”

For cleaning, shape matters less than the outside of the toilet. A skirted trapway gives smooth sides, and a quick release seat makes the hinge area easier to reach on either shape.

For replacement or upgrade seats, the ANZZI Hal Series non-electric bidet seat for elongated toilets lists 19.6 x 14.6 in and 1.5 in thick at $78.39, and the WoodBridge BID02 elongated smart bidet seat lists an overall height of 4.4 in at $1,080.00.

Frequently asked questions

Is an elongated or round toilet better?

Neither is better for everyone. Elongated bowls are generally more comfortable for adults, while round bowls take up about 2 inches less space and suit small bathrooms and kids.

How do I know my toilet bowl shape?

Measure from the center of the seat bolt holes straight to the front edge of the bowl. Ferguson lists round at about 16.5 inches and elongated at about 18.5 inches.

What toilet seat size do I need?

Buy the seat shape that matches your bowl, then check the bowl width and bolt hole spacing against the seat spec sheet.

Does a compact elongated toilet fit where a round one did?

Some manufacturers say so; WoodBridge claims its compact elongated bowl occupies the same space as a round front bowl. Always compare the listed overall depth with your measured space and local code before you order.
