Kids ATV Size Guide: Age, Voltage and Speed

A good kids ATV size guide starts with the rider, not the vehicle: match the manufacturer’s minimum age and maximum rider weight to your child, then judge maturity and skill. Height alone is a poor shortcut. Below is how to size a youth ATV, what to know about voltage and speed, and how the MotoTec electric models in our store compare.

Kids ATV size guide: start with age and maturity

The ATV Safety Institute explains that youth ATVs come in separate categories from adult machines. They are built for smaller hands and feet and travel at slower speeds. Adult ATVs are intended for riders 16 and older, with greater speed, size and weight. Every ATV from its member manufacturers carries a warning label stating the minimum rider age. Its Golden Rules say to ride an ATV that is right for your age and to supervise riders younger than 16.

The same group notes that only a parent can decide readiness, and offers a readiness checklist. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) also publishes ATV safety guidance for families. Its site blocked our automated check, so we cite it here as plain text only and suggest reading it directly.

Practical sizing steps:

  1. Read the age and weight limits on the listing and the vehicle label, and treat them as ceilings, not goals.
  2. Seat your child on the machine: feet should rest on the footrests while hands comfortably reach the grips and brake.
  3. Test whether they can follow rules, stop on command and handle the throttle calmly.
  4. If in doubt, choose the smaller or slower model.

What size ATV for a 10 year old?

There is no single answer. Our MotoTec E-Bully lists a recommended age of 10+ and a 165 lb maximum rider weight. The gas MotoTec Rex also lists 10+. Smaller electric models list 6+ or 8+. A 10 year old who is small, new to riding or still learning to follow rules may do better on a lower-power model with a speed limit. A parent’s judgment of maturity, skill and ability to follow rules matters more than the number on the box, and our own listings say the same.

Electric ATV for kids: 36V vs 48V and what the numbers mean

Voltage and motor watts together hint at power. In our MotoTec electric kids lineup, the 24V Titan lists a 350W motor, the 36V Monster v6 lists 500W, and the 36V E-Bully lists 1000W. In general, more watts means stronger acceleration and hill climbing, which is why higher-powered models are recommended for older riders. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.

On 36V vs 48V kids ATV shopping: none of the MotoTec kids ATVs we found in our ATV searches is listed at 48V. The 48V items that appeared are RMB EV e-Quad listings, which the description calls a four-wheel electric mobility scooter rated up to 450 lb. That is an adult vehicle, not a kids ATV, and is covered on the RMB EV e-Quad listing. For a child, speed settings and recommended age matter more than the voltage label.

Electric kids ATVs we sell: comparison

Specs below are copied from our current listings. Prices are as listed and can change.

Model Voltage and motor Top speed (as listed) Max rider weight Recommended age Battery Price
MotoTec 24V Kids Titan ATV (preorder) 24V, 350W Not stated, parental speed control by key 150 lbs 6+ Two 12V 12Ah $799
MotoTec 36V 500W Monster v6 (preorder) 36V, 500W 5 and 15 MPH, selected by key 150 lbs 8+ Three 12V 12Ah $789
MotoTec E-Bully 36V 1000W 36V, 1000W 20 MPH, limited to 5.5 MPH out of the box 165 lbs 10+ Three 12V 15Ah sealed lead acid $769

The Titan and Monster v6 both list two speeds chosen with the key, so a parent can keep a new rider on the slow setting. They also list a headlight, battery meter, reverse and a safety foot switch on the throttle. The E-Bully lists forward, neutral and reverse, front and rear disc brakes and a roughly 8 to 16 mile range depending on weight and terrain. The listing says the speed limit is changed by disconnecting a red 3-pin connector. Only an adult should make that decision, and we would leave it limited for a first-time rider.

Listing details to confirm before you buy

  • The Titan listing leaves the top speed blank. Call to confirm the speed in each setting.
  • The E-Bully shows 20 MPH max but a 5.5 MPH out-of-box limit, so call to confirm what your child will actually ride at.
  • Warranty text differs: 30 days parts replacement on the Titan and Monster v6, 60 days on the E-Bully.
  • The Titan and Monster v6 are marked preorder, so ask about timing. Assembly is the customer’s responsibility on all three, and mechanical knowledge is advised.

Gas youth ATVs are a separate category

We also carry gas MotoTec youth ATVs, which behave differently from electric models. The Renegade 40cc lists ages 6+, a 150 lb maximum rider weight, 13 MPH and a price of $899. The Rex 110cc lists ages 10+, a 40 MPH speed limiter setting and $1,099. Its listing says it can carry up to 220 lbs but does not state a separate rider weight, so call to confirm. A 40 MPH ceiling is a lot for a young rider, so do not compare gas and electric models by age alone. Browse all MotoTec vehicles for current options and colors, and note that some color variants have thin descriptions, so check the main listing.

Safety checklist for young riders

  • Adult supervision every ride. The ATV Safety Institute says to supervise riders younger than 16.
  • Gear: it recommends a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and gloves. See its riding gear page.
  • One rider only on single-seat models, as the listings show padded single-rider seats.
  • Control the key, as the Institute suggests in its ground rules, and skip rides when your child is tired.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s age and weight limits and read the owner’s manual.

Looking at other ride-on options? Our electric dirt bike size chart and go kart for kids guide use the same age and weight approach. If you own a MotoTec with a 72V pack, see the MotoTec 72V battery replacement guide.

Frequently asked questions

What age is an electric ATV for kids suitable for?

It depends on the model. Our listings range from 6+ for the 24V Titan to 8+ for the Monster v6 and 10+ for the E-Bully. Age is a minimum, so also consider weight, maturity and skill.

Is a 36V ATV too fast for a child?

Voltage alone does not set speed. The Monster v6 lists a 5 MPH setting and a 15 MPH setting, and the E-Bully ships limited to 5.5 MPH. Start on the lowest setting with supervision.

Can my child ride an adult ATV if they are tall?

No. The ATV Safety Institute states adult ATVs are intended for riders 16 and older. Choose a youth model that fits your child’s age and size.

What is the maximum rider weight?

The Titan and Monster v6 list 150 lbs, and the E-Bully lists 165 lbs. Stay under the limit and call us at 866-777-2590 if you are near it.

Shipping is free on orders of $999 or more and $200 flat below that. Our team is available Monday to Friday, 9AM to 6PM PST at 866-777-2590, and our return and refund policy has the details. Always wear a helmet, supervise every ride and follow manufacturer limits.
