Massage chair not working? Start with the simple checks: power at the wall outlet, the main power switch on the chair itself, and whether the chair shut itself off to cool down. Most fixes below take minutes and need no tools. Manufacturer quotes come from the Kahuna Dios-1288 owner’s manual. Kahuna is the main brand we carry, but your own manual has the final word.
Safety before you troubleshoot
- Unplug first. Turn off the controls and the main switch, then pull the plug by its body, not the cord.
- Do not open the housing. The manual says there are no customer serviceable parts inside, and Kahuna’s warranty policy excludes unauthorized repairs.
- Water or a damaged cord means stop. The manual says to have the chair professionally repaired, not to replace parts yourself.
Massage chair not working at all: power checks
- Test the outlet. Plug a lamp into it. The Dios-1288 troubleshooting table says to check that the plug is fully inserted and the outlet works.
- Check the chair’s main power switch. The Dios-1288 has a power switch, a safety fuse and the cord socket on a panel at the back of the base. The remote does nothing if this switch is off. Check that the cord is seated at the chair end too.
- Bypass power strips and surge protectors. Check the strip’s switch and reset button, or try a wall outlet. The manual calls for a properly installed grounded socket and no plug adapter. A licensed electrician and local code have the final word on wiring.
- Check the breaker. Our listings show rated power of 96W for the HANI-3800 and 230W max for the SM-7300 (more in our massage chair power consumption guide), so a breaker that trips whenever the chair starts is a warning sign.
- The fuse. The manual shows the safety fuse but gives no replacement steps, so unless yours does, treat a suspected blown fuse as a service call.
Chair stops on its own: overheating and auto shut off
If the remote responds but the chair does not move, the Dios-1288 manual says it may have shut down on overheating protection: turn off the power and let it cool for 30 to 50 minutes. If both remote and chair stop responding, the chair may be in “full stop” mode after a program finished. Press the power button again.
Programs end on a timer, so stopping at the end of a session is normal. The manual suggests a maximum operating time of 20 minutes, and Kahuna’s FAQ recommends 15 to 30 minutes per session for most users.
Massage chair remote not working
- Confirm main power. A dark remote often means the rear switch is off. Keep the remote dry, as the manual asks.
- Check the remote cable. On the Dios-1288, the tablet controller’s cable plugs into a connector on the chair and can work loose after a move. The manual says the warranty does not cover the cord and remote if the chair is moved with them connected.
- Check coverage. Kahuna says handheld remotes may carry a limited warranty separate from the chair.
Massage chair rollers not working or noisy
- Check the mode. An airbag only program or a paused session leaves the rollers still.
- Some odd movement is normal. On the Dios-1288, an anti-collision rule between its two roller mechanisms can change the motion slightly.
- Look for objects. With the chair unplugged, remove anything visible in a gap without reaching into the mechanism. The manual also says not to sit with hard objects in your pockets.
- Grinding or clicking. The manual says to turn the chair off, unplug it and contact customer service.
Airbags not inflating
Make sure an airbag program is running and intensity is not at its lowest. If one zone stopped after assembly or a move, check the air connections. On the Dios-1288, each side panel connects with color matched air pipes and the leg rest has its own air tube connection, so a loose connector at a setup point is a likely cause. Anything inside the frame is a technician’s job. If no airbag inflates and you hear no pump, call for service.
Recline or leg rest stuck
Look for a pet, toy, wall or the power cord in the way. The Dios-1288 manual asks for about 3 inches behind the chair, 19.7 inches in front of the footrest and a level floor. If a motor hums but nothing moves, stop and call for service rather than forcing it.
Body scan problems
On the Dios-1288, the scan runs once after power on when you pick an auto program, then gives you 8 seconds to fine tune the shoulder position or press OK. Sit all the way back and remove hair ornaments. If the rollers land wrong, power off and on to rescan. If the chair still does not fit, our massage chair buying guide explains track length and body size.
Massage chair error and symptom table
The Dios-1288 manual lists no numbered error codes, so we list none. If your screen shows a code, write it down for the service team; codes do not carry over between brands or models.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing turns on | Outlet, main switch, cord, power strip | Test outlet, flip rear switch, reseat cord, use a wall outlet |
| Remote works, chair does not move | Overheating protection | Power off, cool 30 to 50 minutes |
| Remote and chair both stop | Program finished | Press the power button again |
| Rollers still | Airbag only mode, paused, blockage | Change program, check for objects |
| Grinding or clicking | Mechanical fault | Stop, unplug, call service |
| One airbag zone flat | Loose air pipe connector | Check setup connections, then call service |
| Breaker or fuse trips again | Internal electrical fault | Stop using, call service |
When to stop and call for service
Stop using the chair if you smell burning, see sparks, find a damaged cord or torn cover, or a fault keeps returning. The manual lists Kahuna’s service line as 855-646-9500. Kahuna’s warranty policy offers in-home technician service on selected models and paid in-home support after the warranty ends, but excludes wear and tear, misuse, liquid damage and unauthorized repairs. A health note: relief claims on product pages are the manufacturer’s. The NCCIH says the risk from massage appears low but reports rare serious side effects. If you use your chair for pain, are pregnant, or have a medical condition or implanted device, ask your doctor first.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my massage chair remote not working?
Usually the rear main switch is off or the remote cable came loose after a move.
Why are my massage chair rollers not working when the airbags are?
You may be in an airbag only program or paused. If an auto program does not move them, or they grind, call for service.
What does a massage chair error code mean?
Codes are model specific. Check your manual, or give the code to the service team.
Why does my massage chair turn off by itself?
Usually the program ended or overheating protection kicked in. The Dios-1288 manual says to switch off and let it cool for 30 to 50 minutes.
