How Long Do Massage Chairs Last? Lifespan and Warranty

How long do massage chairs last? There is no single answer, and most brands do not publish one. The clearest manufacturer statement we found comes from Human Touch, which says that under normal residential use and care, one of its massage chairs “may last longer than six to eight years without requiring service,” and calls that a general estimate, not a guarantee. Below: what wears out, what warranties actually cover, the care steps from the owner’s manual, and the signs a chair needs service.

How long do massage chairs last, according to the makers?

Human Touch’s support article, “How long should my Human Touch product last?”, lists what drives the number: usage frequency and session length, the number and weight of users, misuse or accidental damage, room temperature and humidity, power quality, cleaning, and how the chair is moved and stored. It also makes a point worth remembering: expected lifespan and warranty coverage are different things. A chair can keep working long after its warranty ends, and an estimated lifespan does not extend the coverage.

Kahuna, the main massage chair brand we carry, publishes no lifespan figure on its warranty or FAQ pages, so we will not invent one. It does publish warranty exclusions and detailed care rules, which tell you more about making a chair last than any average.

What breaks on a massage chair

A massage chair is a recliner with a machine inside. No brand we checked publishes failure rates, so we cannot rank parts, but these are the ones doing the work:

Part What it does What the Kahuna manual warns against
Rollers and track The roller mechanism travels the L, SL or HSL track along your back Pressing on or stepping on the massage heads, putting hands in the gaps, dropping objects into slots
Airbags and air system Cushions inflate and deflate to squeeze arms, hips, calves and feet Folding the massage cushions for storage
Upholstery PU leather or fabric over the frame and moving parts Direct sun, heaters and high heat (the manual says this can fade, discolor or harden PU); any tear, however small
Recline motors and frame Move the backrest and leg rest, including zero gravity positions Sitting or pressing on the backrest while reclined, standing on the chair, moving it while in use
Electronics, remote and cord Control board, remote, heating, power cord Wet rooms, plug adapters, damaged or pinched cords, moving the chair with the plug and remote still connected

The table is drawn from the Kahuna Dios-1288 owner’s manual. The same manual says not to run the chair empty for long periods. Other Kahuna manuals may word things differently, so keep the one that ships with your chair.

Massage chair warranty: what is covered and what is not

Warranty length varies a lot, even inside one brand. Here is what our Kahuna listings show today:

Chair (our listing) Track Warranty as listed
Kahuna HANI-3800 compact L-Track 1 year parts and labor
Kahuna LM-6800S SL-Track 3 years limited: 1 year parts and labor, 2 years parts, 3 years structure
Kahuna SM-7300 SL-Track 2 years parts and labor
Kahuna EM-8500 King’s Elite HSL-Track 2 years parts and labor
Kahuna Hubot 4D (HM series) HSL-Track 3 years parts and labor
Kahuna SM-9300 Flex-Track 5 years parts and labor

Read the LM-6800S line carefully: “3 years limited” means labor for one year, parts for two and structure for three, not three years of free repairs. Check for that kind of split on any chair.

Kahuna’s warranty policy adds the fine print:

  • Who you buy from matters. The warranty applies only to chairs bought from Kahuna or its authorized distributors and resellers. Chairs from unauthorized third party sellers are not covered.
  • Exclusions. Normal wear and tear, improper installation or misuse, accidents or negligence, unauthorized repairs or modifications, natural disasters, animal damage and liquid damage.
  • Separate terms for some parts. Accessories and parts such as handheld remotes may have a shorter warranty than the chair.
  • Commercial use. In an office, salon or other non-residential setting, the warranty may be limited or may not apply.
  • Service at home. Depending on the model, Kahuna says its 2 or 3 year coverage may include in-home technician visits, and it offers paid in-home support after the warranty ends.

The Dios-1288 manual also says you must register the warranty at Kahuna’s service site, and that the power cord and remote are not covered if the chair is moved with them connected. Not every listing states a warranty at all: our BOSSCARE 3D zero gravity chair page does not, so call us at 866-777-2590 to confirm coverage before you order a chair like that.

Massage chair maintenance: care steps from the manual

  1. Clean dry. Turn the chair off and unplug it, then wipe it with a dry cloth. The Dios-1288 manual says not to use water, alcohol or other liquid cleaners.
  2. Unplug after use. Switch off the power and unplug the chair after a session, and turn off the main switch if it will sit unused for a while. Pull the plug, not the cord.
  3. Pick the spot carefully. Keep it indoors, out of direct sun, away from heaters and stoves, and out of damp rooms such as bathrooms or pool areas. Leave room to recline: the manual asks for a few inches behind the chair and about 19.7 inches in front of the footrest. Our guide to how much space a massage chair needs covers the full numbers.
  4. Protect the floor and the cord. Kahuna recommends a rug or carpet because moving the chair can damage floors (we list a Kahuna massage chair rug). Never run the cord under the chair, and move it empty, with two people and the plug and remote disconnected.
  5. Keep sessions sensible. Kahuna’s FAQ recommends 15 to 30 minutes per session for most users, and the Dios-1288 manual suggests a maximum of 20 minutes.
  6. Keep kids and pets off it. Animal damage is a listed exclusion, and the manual says children and pets should not play on the chair.

Signs your massage chair needs service

  • Unusual sounds or movements. The manual says to turn the chair off, unplug it and contact customer service.
  • Remote works but the chair stops. It may have shut down on overheating protection. The manual says to switch it off and let it cool for 30 to 50 minutes.
  • Torn upholstery. Even a small tear means stop using it, unplug it and have it repaired.
  • A damaged cord or plug, or any water exposure. Do not replace or open anything yourself. Kahuna says there are no user serviceable parts inside, and unauthorized repairs void the warranty.

Buying for a longer life

Compare warranty structure, not just headline years, and buy from an authorized seller. For how warranty years fit into the money side, see our massage chair vs massage therapist cost breakdown. The massage chair buying guide explains tracks and sizing, and every model is on our Kahuna brand page. Read our return and refund policy before you order.

A health note: any relief or relaxation benefits on a product page are the manufacturer’s claims. The NCCIH says the risk from massage appears low but notes rare serious side effects. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or are unsure, ask your doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the typical massage chair lifespan?

Most brands do not publish one. Human Touch estimates its chairs may last longer than six to eight years without service under normal home use and care, and says this is not a guarantee.

Does a massage chair warranty cover wear and tear?

Not at Kahuna. Its warranty policy excludes normal wear and tear, misuse, accidents, liquid and animal damage, and unauthorized repairs.

How do I clean a massage chair?

Unplug it and wipe it with a dry cloth. Kahuna’s Dios-1288 manual says not to use water, alcohol or other liquid cleaning products.

Can I still get my chair serviced after the warranty ends?

Kahuna says it offers paid in-home technician support on request after the warranty period. The Dios-1288 manual lists Kahuna’s service line as 855-646-9500. For questions about a chair you bought from us, call 866-777-2590, Monday to Friday 9AM to 6PM PST.
