Massage Chair vs Massage Therapist: 3-Year Cost

The short answer: over three years, a massage chair costs less than a massage therapist only if you would otherwise book sessions often. Here is the massage chair vs massage therapist cost math. A compact Kahuna chair at $1,899 comes in under three years of monthly one-hour sessions even at the low end of typical pricing. A $3,509 full-body chair beats the therapist for biweekly visits but not for cheap monthly visits. An $8,999 flagship only wins if you would book weekly or pay premium rates. Below is the math, line by line, plus what a chair simply cannot do.

Massage chair vs massage therapist cost: the inputs

Every number here comes from a source you can check.

  • Therapist sessions: the cost guide Thervo (thervo.com/costs/massage-prices, last edited October 22, 2025) lists $60 to $150 for a 60-minute massage, with most clients tipping 15% to 20% or a flat $10 to $20. It also notes packages or memberships typically save 10% or more.
  • Chair prices: current prices on our Kahuna listings, shown below.
  • Shipping: we ship free freight on orders of $999 or more, so every chair in this article ships at no extra charge (orders below $999 pay a $200 flat rate).
  • Electricity: the U.S. Energy Information Administration reports an average U.S. residential price of 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026, ranging up to 48.00 cents in Hawaii (EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A).

Three years of chair ownership, worked out

We assumed one 30-minute session every day for three years (1,095 sessions, about 548 hours) and used each chair’s listed maximum power draw, which overstates real use since a chair does not run at max the whole time.

Chair Price Shipping Listed max power 3-year electricity (U.S. avg) 3-year total
Kahuna HANI-3800 compact $1,899 Free 96 W About $10 About $1,909
Kahuna SM-7300 $3,509.10 Free 230 W About $23 About $3,532
Kahuna 7D AI Dual Core (Dios-7300) $8,999 Free 230 W About $23 About $9,022

Even at Hawaii’s 48 cents per kWh, the 230 W chairs come to roughly $60 in electricity over three years. Power is a rounding error; the purchase price is the whole story.

Other Kahuna options sit between these, but their listings do not state power consumption, so we left them out of the electricity math: the HM-5000 ($1,999.99, HSL-track, 1 year parts and labor), the LM-7500 ($2,699, SL-track, 13 auto programs, 2 years parts and labor), the LM-6800S ($3,099, 12 auto programs, max 60-minute session time) and the LM-9100 ($4,999.99, 21 auto programs). Using 230 W as a rough ceiling, their electricity would also stay in the tens of dollars.

Three years of therapist visits, worked out

Frequency Sessions in 3 years At $60 to $150 (no tip) With tip ($69 to $180 per visit)
Monthly 36 $2,160 to $5,400 $2,484 to $6,480
Every two weeks 78 $4,680 to $11,700 $5,382 to $14,040
Weekly 156 $9,360 to $23,400 $10,764 to $28,080

The tipped column uses 15% on $60 and 20% on $150. A membership or package that saves 10% would shave roughly a tenth off these figures.

Where a chair comes out ahead (and where it does not)

  • HANI-3800 (about $1,909): lower than every scenario in the table, including monthly visits at $60 with no tip ($2,160). For a monthly massage habit, this is the one case where the chair covers its cost within three years on our numbers. Note it is full body without foot coverage and carries a 1 year parts and labor warranty, so years two and three are not covered by that warranty.
  • SM-7300 (about $3,532): higher than cheap monthly visits ($2,160 to $2,484), lower than monthly visits at $150 and lower than biweekly visits at any price in the range ($4,680 and up). Its listing shows a 2 year parts and labor warranty.
  • Dios-7300 (about $9,022): higher than all monthly scenarios and low-priced biweekly ones. It only comes in under the therapist for biweekly visits at the upper price range or weekly visits. Buy it for features, not to save money, unless you truly would book weekly.

What the math leaves out: extended warranty costs (we list a Kahuna 1 year extended warranty at $500), repairs, floor space and the fact that a chair is shared by everyone in the house. One chair used by two people halves the per-person cost; one therapist session serves one person.

Massage chair vs real massage: what a chair cannot do

Comparing price alone is not fair to either side. A licensed therapist can ask about your history, feel where muscles are tight, adjust pressure the moment you say it hurts, work around an injury and change technique mid-session. A chair runs programs. Body scanning (listed on the HANI-3800, SM-7300, HM-5000, LM-6800S, LM-7500 and LM-9100) adjusts roller position to your frame, and you can change intensity on the remote, but the chair does not respond to how your tissue feels.

A chair does win on convenience: no booking, no drive, no tip, and you can use it for 15 minutes after work. Plenty of owners use both, keeping occasional therapist visits for specific problems and the chair for routine relaxation.

What the research says, conservatively

A 2024 rapid scoping review in EXPLORE by Youn and colleagues (doi.org/10.1016/j.explore.2023.10.002) screened 59 articles and included 18 studies on massage chairs. The authors concluded that massage chairs “may positively affect both physical and mental health concerns,” with more studies showing mental health benefits, and they noted two case reports of complications. A scoping review maps existing evidence; it does not prove a chair treats any condition. Treat manufacturer claims on any listing as claims.

Check with your doctor first

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says the risk of harm from massage appears low, but there have been rare reports of serious side effects such as a blood clot, nerve injury or bone fracture, some involving vigorous massage or people at higher risk such as older adults (NCCIH: Massage Therapy). If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are unsure, ask your doctor before using a massage chair or booking a deep massage.

How to decide

  1. Be honest about how often you actually book massages now, not how often you wish you did.
  2. Multiply that by your local price plus tip, then compare it to the chair total above.
  3. If the chair wins only at frequencies you have never kept up, the therapist is the cheaper choice.
  4. Read our massage chair buying guide for track types and sizing, plus the Kahuna massage chair review, whether zero gravity chairs are worth it and our guide for tall users.

Browse every model on our Kahuna brand page, or call 866-777-2590 (Mon to Fri, 9AM to 6PM PST) to confirm specs not shown on a listing, such as power draw. Before buying, review our return and refund policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is a massage chair cheaper than a massage therapist?

It depends on frequency and chair price. Using $60 to $150 per session, a $1,899 compact chair costs less than three years of monthly visits, while an $8,999 chair only costs less than biweekly visits at higher prices or weekly visits.

Is a massage chair as good as a real massage?

Not in the same way. A therapist assesses you by hand and adjusts pressure to your feedback; a chair runs preset programs with adjustable intensity. A chair offers convenience and daily access, which a weekly appointment cannot.

How much electricity does a massage chair use?

Our Kahuna listings show 96 W max for the HANI-3800 and 230 W max for the SM-7300. At the July 2026 U.S. average of 18.31 cents per kWh, 30 minutes a day for three years costs roughly $10 to $23.

Does shipping add to the cost?

Not for these chairs. Orders of $999 or more ship free freight; orders below that pay a $200 flat rate.
