A velvet sofa gives you rich, deep color and a soft, plush feel, and it has no loose weave for claws to catch. The tradeoffs are real: velvet shows pile marks, pet hair and dust, and rich colors can fade in direct sun. If you pick a polyester or performance velvet, brush it regularly and check the cleaning code before any spill, velvet can work in a busy home.
What velvet is, and the types you will see
Velvet is a woven fabric with a short, dense pile that gives it the plush feel and sheen. The fiber changes how the sofa behaves. Common types, per the Sofas and Stuff velvet guide and AllModern’s velvet explainer:
- Cotton velvet: very soft and less shiny, but Sofas and Stuff notes it is more prone to marks from liquids and scratches from pet claws.
- Polyester velvet: mimics the look of silk velvet but is more practical for everyday use. Polyester and blends are described as resistant to wear, scratches and snags.
- Performance velvet: a label sellers use for velvets made for heavier use. Read the actual care instructions, not just the name.
- Crushed velvet: made by twisting the fabric while wet and pressing it, so the pile lies in random directions.
Rove Concepts lists several of its own velvets (Plush Velvet, Cotton Velvet, Ombra Velvet, Vintage Velvet, Corduroy Velvet and more), and each has its own care rule. We cover those in how to clean a Rove Concepts couch.
Velvet sofa pros
- Color depth: AllModern points out that the deeper pile makes colors look more intense and richer than the same dye on cotton or linen.
- Softness and sheen: the pile catches light, which Castlery describes as adding depth and drama to a room in its sofa fabric guide.
- No loose weave to snag: because velvet has no obvious loops on the surface, AllModern notes cats have a harder time snagging their claws in it than in fabrics with a more visible weave.
Velvet sofa cons
- Pile marks and crushing: sitting in the same spot presses the pile flat, and it can look lighter or darker from different angles. Rotating and plumping cushions helps, and brushing lifts the pile back up.
- Fading in sun: both AllModern and Sofas and Stuff warn that velvet can fade in direct sunlight over long periods. Keep it out of a south facing window or use shades.
- Shows dust and hair: Castlery’s guide says velvet can attract pet hair, dust and stains, and calls it less “bulletproof” than performance fabrics.
- Water marks on some types: cotton velvet can mark if a liquid is spilled, so a quick blot matters more than on synthetic velvet.
Velvet couch with pets: claws, hair and accidents
Velvet is better with claws than most people expect and worse with hair. With no loops for a claw to hook, pulled threads are less likely than on a nubby weave or boucle. Sofas and Stuff recommends a synthetic or synthetic blend velvet for homes with pets, since cotton velvet marks more easily.
Hair clings to the pile and shows on a contrasting color. Pick a shade close to your pet’s coat, keep a velvet brush or lint roller nearby, and vacuum with the soft upholstery attachment. If pets are the main reason you are shopping, our performance fabric vs leather sofa guide compares those two options in detail.
How to clean velvet: the general routine
Start with the cleaning code
Look for the manufacturer tag under a cushion or on the deck, or check the product listing. Upholstery uses four common codes, as explained by American Leather:
- W: water based cleaners or mild detergents are safe.
- S: solvent based, water free cleaners only. Water can damage the fabric or leave rings.
- WS or SW: either type is fine. Test on a hidden spot first.
- X: do not clean it yourself beyond vacuuming. Call a professional.

Weekly care
- Vacuum with the soft upholstery brush to pick up crumbs and lint.
- Brush with a velvet or clothes brush, working with the direction of the pile so it lies smooth.
- Rotate and plump seat and back cushions to spread out wear and limit crush marks.
Spills and crush marks
Blot spills right away with a clean, damp or dry cloth (depending on the code). Do not rub. For a dried spill, AllModern’s advice is to consult the manufacturer. For stubborn crush marks, brush first, then check the tag before trying a light mist of water and gentle brushing. On anything marked S or X, skip the water.
Velvet vs performance fabric vs leather vs boucle
| Factor | Velvet | Performance fabric | Leather | Boucle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, smooth pile with sheen | Varies by weave | Smooth, cool at first | Nubby, looped texture |
| Claws | No loops to catch | Depends on weave | Can scratch | Loops can catch |
| Pet hair | Shows and clings | Depends on weave | Wipes off | Can trap hair in loops |
| Spills | Follow the code; blot fast | Built for spills, but check the code | Wipe up quickly | Follow the code; blot |
| Main watch out | Crush marks, sun fading | Name alone tells you little | Grade varies widely | Snags |

Frequently asked questions
Is a velvet sofa a good idea with pets?
It can be. Velvet has no loose loops for claws to catch, but it shows and holds pet hair. A polyester or synthetic blend velvet in a color close to your pet’s coat is the practical choice.
How do you clean velvet without ruining it?
Check the cleaning code first (W, S, WS or X), vacuum with a soft brush, brush with the pile, and blot spills without rubbing. If the tag says X or there is no code, call a professional or the seller.
Does velvet fade?
Yes, velvet can fade with long exposure to direct sunlight. Place it away from strong sun or use window coverings.
How do I fix crush marks on a velvet couch?
Brush the area to lift the pile. If the code allows water, a light mist followed by gentle brushing can help. Rotating cushions prevents most marks.
