Dining Table Size for 6 (Plus 4, 8 and 10 Seats)

The right dining table size for 6 people is usually a rectangle about 70 to 72 in long or a round table about 60 in across, but the table is only half the answer. The other half is the room around it: chairs need space to pull out and people need space to walk behind them. This guide gives the sizing rules from published design guides, does the math for 4, 6, 8 and 10 seats, and shows which tables we sell fit each count, with sizes taken from each product page.

The three numbers behind every dining table size

  • About 24 in of table edge per person. Castlery’s guide to key dining table measurements says to “allocate around 24 inches of width per dining chair.” Wider chairs need more.
  • 36 to 42 in of clearance around the table. A Houzz guide to key measurements for the dining room says 36 to 42 in “around the entire table allows for chairs to be occupied with space for others to pass.” It suggests 48 to 60 in in open-plan layouts where people circulate past, and 54 in where wheelchair access is needed.
  • 10 to 12 in between chair seat and tabletop. Castlery gives this range for comfortable leg room, with standard dining tables at 28 to 30 in high.

Houzz also notes that most rectangular dining tables are 36 to 42 in wide, and that formal dining tables usually need at least 66 in of length to work with six place settings.

Dining table size for 6

With 24 in per person, six people fit two ways at a rectangle: three per long side (about 72 in of length), or two per side plus one at each end. A table of about 70 to 72 in long and 34 to 40 in wide is the sweet spot. Tables we sell in that range:

Table Size (L x W x H) Our price
Heritage Dining Table 72 x 39.4 x 29.9 in $2,583
Evelyn Dining Table (71 in) 70.9 x 34.3 x 29.5 in $2,216
Kyoto Dining Table 70.87 x 35.4 x 29.5 in $2,169
Coppola Dining Table 70.9 x 39.4 x 29.5 in $2,099
Marcus Dining Table (extendable) 55.1 to 70.9 x 35.4 x 29.9 in $1,217

The Coppola listing itself says it “seats up to 6-8 people.” At 39.4 in wide, the Heritage and Coppola leave more room for serving dishes down the middle than the 34.3 in Evelyn. The Marcus has a removable leaf, so it runs at 55.1 in for everyday meals and opens to 70.9 in for six. For more on one of these, see our Evelyn dining table guide.

Prefer round? A 63 in round gives about 198 in of edge (pi times diameter), which is room for six at 24 in each with space to spare. We sell the Winston Dining Table 63 in ($2,799) and the Verona Dining Table (63 x 63 in, $2,799), and the Gallus comes in a 63 in size in black concrete.

Dining table size for 8

Eight people fit as three per long side plus one at each end, or four per long side with nobody at the ends. At 24 in per person, four per side needs about 96 in of length, while three per side plus ends can work from about 72 in if the ends are wide enough for a chair. For a comfortable eight, look at roughly 84 to 96 in long. Options:

  • Alessia Dining Table: 83.9 x 41.3 in, $2,799.
  • Arco Extendable Dining Table: 79.1 x 41.3 in as listed, with a removable leaf that stores under the table, $2,239.
  • Solana Dining Table: 71 x 41.3 in, with a 95 in size listed in certain finishes, $2,799 at the 71 in size.

Dining table size for 10

Ten usually means four per side plus one at each end, or about 96 in of length and up. The 95 in Solana is close, and the Maia Extendable Dining Table ($2,379) lists room for “up to 10 side chairs” with up to five leaf extensions, with support legs required when leaves are added. Call us to confirm the extended length you need before ordering.

Best size round dining table for 4

A 48 in round is the classic choice for four. Its edge is about 151 in, more than the 96 in four people need, so everyone has elbow room and there is space for a fifth chair at a squeeze. We sell several 48 in rounds:

A center base leaves more knee room around the edge than four corner legs. The Winston 48 in, for example, lists a 21.7 in wide base.

Dining table size for your room

Add the clearance to both sides of the table in each direction. With the 36 in minimum:

Table Minimum room (36 in clearance) Comfortable room (42 in clearance)
48 in round 120 x 120 in (10 x 10 ft) 132 x 132 in (11 x 11 ft)
63 in round 135 x 135 in (about 11.3 x 11.3 ft) 147 x 147 in (about 12.3 x 12.3 ft)
72 x 39.4 in rectangle 144 x 111.4 in (12 x about 9.3 ft) 156 x 123.4 in (13 x about 10.3 ft)
83.9 x 41.3 in rectangle 155.9 x 113.3 in (about 13 x 9.4 ft) 167.9 x 125.3 in (about 14 x 10.4 ft)

If one side of the table sits against a bench or banquette with no walkway, you can drop the clearance on that side. If your dining area is also a path to the kitchen, use Houzz’s 48 to 60 in on that side.

Check the chairs, not just the table

The 24 in rule assumes average chairs. Chair widths among dining chairs we sell range from 18.8 in (Geno) and 21.4 in (Wishbone Chair, $251) to 26.4 in (Forja). Wide armchairs like the Forja may cost you a seat per side. Check height too: the Heritage Dining Chair’s 18.5 in seat under the 29.9 in Heritage table leaves 11.4 in, inside Castlery’s 10 to 12 in range, while a 20 in seat like the Aulus under a 29.5 in table leaves only 9.5 in. Our Wishbone chair review covers that chair in detail.
