If you are wondering what size rug for living room seating you need, start with the furniture, not the room. In most living rooms an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 rug is right, because it is big enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it. Below: bedrooms by bed size, dining rooms, hallways, and how to test a size with painter’s tape.
The one rule for every room: leave a floor border
Most guides agree on a strip of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Well Woven’s size guide suggests 18 to 24 inches of exposed floor around the rug, and Fibreworks uses 12 to 18 inches for living rooms.
What size rug for living room layouts: three ways to place it
Front legs on (the most common choice)
Only the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. This ties the seating together and suits an 8 x 10 in most rooms. Well Woven pairs the 8 x 10 with this layout, and Room and Board shows a 6 x 9 working the same way in a smaller room.
All legs on
Every piece of seating sits fully on the rug. This needs a large rug, usually 9 x 12 or bigger, and a room big enough to keep the floor border. Homes and Gardens notes that a sofa with a solid plinth base (no visible legs) should sit entirely on the rug, since half on and half off looks unbalanced.
Floating (no legs on)
A smaller rug sits under the coffee table only. It is the budget option for small apartments, though it can make a room feel smaller. Well Woven pairs this layout with a 5 x 7.
How the rug relates to sofa length
Whatever the layout, the rug should be at least as wide as the sofa (Well Woven). Room and Board suggests letting the rug run 8 to 12 inches past each end of the sofa. For a sectional, use the long side as your minimum rug width. Our sectional sofa dimensions guide covers sectional sizes and walkway clearances, and the coffee table size guide covers table length and spacing from the sofa.
Rug size for queen bed, king bed and other bed sizes
In a bedroom, your feet should land on rug when you get out of bed. Fibreworks suggests the rug extend 30 to 36 inches past each side and the foot of the bed, and sit under at least two thirds of the bed. Room and Board uses at least 24 inches on each side with an 8 x 10. Well Woven’s starting points by bed size are:
- Twin: 5 x 7 or 6 x 9.
- Full: 7 x 10 or 8 x 11 (8 x 10 also works).
- Queen: 8 x 10 is the usual pick; 9 x 12 if the room allows.
- King and California king: the largest rug the room fits, such as 9 x 12 or larger.
The rug runs sideways, long side across the bed. Homes and Gardens describes leaving an inch or two between the rug and the bedside tables. On a budget, use a 5 x 8 across the lower part of the bed, or a runner on each side.

Rug size under dining table: plan for the chairs
Size a dining rug so chair back legs stay on it when someone sits down. Homes and Gardens allows a minimum of 24 inches past the edge of the table. Fibreworks suggests 24 to 36 inches per side, using 24 for small chairs and 36 for large upholstered ones. Well Woven gives 18 to 36 inches. Measure with any extension leaf in.
A quick way to do the math: add 4 to 6 feet to the table’s length and width. A 6 by 3 foot table plus 2 feet per side needs about 7 x 10, so buy an 8 x 10. For round tables seating four to six, Well Woven suggests a 7 or 9 foot round rug; a rectangular rug also works under a round table as long as the chairs stay on it. Our dining table size guide covers table sizes by number of guests.
Room and Board also suggests a low pile or flat weave so chairs slide easily.
Hallway runners and entryways
Fibreworks suggests leaving 4 to 6 inches of bare floor between a runner and each wall, and between the runner and each end of the hall, and keeping the ends clear of doorways. Well Woven suggests a runner cover at least 75% of the hall’s length.
Standard rug sizes and where they fit
| Rug size | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x 3 | Entry, bedside, kitchen sink | Accent only |
| Runner (2 x 7 and longer) | Hallways, beside a bed | Leave 4 to 6 in. of floor at walls and ends |
| 5 x 7 or 5 x 8 | Floating living room layout, twin bed, small dining table for 2 to 4 | Furniture legs usually off the rug |
| 6 x 9 | Small living room, twin or full bed | Front legs on in a compact room |
| 8 x 10 | Most living rooms, queen bed, dining table for 6 | The most versatile size |
| 9 x 12 | Larger living rooms, king bed, dining table for 8 | Room for all legs on in many layouts |
| 10 x 14 and larger | Open plan rooms, large sectionals | Check the floor border first |
8×10 vs 9×12 rug: which to choose
An 8 x 10 covers 80 square feet and a 9 x 12 covers 108, about 35% more. Choose 8 x 10 for a seating group under about 10 feet across or a front legs on layout. Choose 9 x 12 for all legs on, a sectional, a king bed, or when an 8 x 10 leaves well over 2 feet of floor on each side. Listed sizes can run a few inches short: our 8 x 10 beige and ivory geometric rug measures 94.49 by 120.08 inches, just under 8 feet wide.
Tape it out before you buy
Well Woven recommends marking the rug’s footprint with painter’s tape before ordering. Leave the outline down for a day and walk through the room. Check that pulled out chairs stay inside the tape and that doors will clear the rug’s thickness.

Frequently asked questions
What size rug for living room with a sofa and two chairs?
Usually an 8 x 10 with front legs on. If the group is wider than about 10 feet, or you want every leg on, go to 9 x 12.
What size rug for a queen bed?
An 8 x 10 placed sideways is the common choice. A 9 x 12 gives more rug on each side in a larger room.
What size rug for a king bed?
Start at 9 x 12. Smaller rugs leave only a thin strip on each side of a king.
How much bigger than the table should a dining rug be?
At least 24 inches past each table edge, up to 36 inches for large upholstered chairs.
