Counter height vs bar height stools comes down to one number: the height of the surface you are sitting at. A standard kitchen counter is about 36 inches tall and takes a counter stool with a seat around 24 to 26 inches. A bar top is about 40 to 42 inches tall and takes a bar stool with a seat around 28 to 30 inches. Buy the wrong one and you either hit your knees or end up eating at chin level.
Below: how to measure, how much room each stool needs, swivel or stationary, and which stools we carry at each height.
Counter height vs bar height stools: the numbers
The furniture retailer Nathan James publishes a clear sizing guide (Counter Height vs Bar Height Stools). Its ranges are the ones most guides use:
| Surface | Surface height | Stool seat height | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter height | 35 to 37 in | 24 to 26 in | Most kitchen islands and peninsulas |
| Bar height | 40 to 42 in | 28 to 30 in | Raised bar ledges, home bars, pub tables |
The same guide says the gap between the two stool types is usually about 4 inches, and that the goal is 9 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter. Other guides vary. Chairish, for example, puts counter stools at 24 to 28 inches and bar stools at 28 to 36 inches. That overlap is why measuring beats trusting the product name.
What height bar stool do I need? Measure first
Nathan James recommends this method:
- Measure from the floor to the underside of the counter or bar top, not the top surface.
- Subtract 9 to 12 inches.
- The result is your target seat height.
Their worked examples: a 36 inch counter minus 10 gives 26, so you need counter stools. If your counter is a nonstandard 38 to 39 inches, the guide suggests staying with counter stools but choosing one closer to a 26 inch seat.
Also check overhang: the guide recommends at least 12 inches for counter seating and 12 to 15 inches for bar seating, or knees hit the cabinet doors.
Counter stool vs bar stool: which is right for your kitchen?
For most homes the answer is a counter stool, simply because most islands are built at standard counter height. Nathan James notes that standard kitchen counters measure about 36 inches, which means most islands need stools with 24 to 26 inch seats.
Bar stools make sense when you have a raised ledge behind the island, a dedicated home bar, a basement bar, or a pub-height table. Bar stools do not belong at a standard 36 inch island.
Some practical differences beyond height:
- Getting on and off. A lower counter seat is easier for kids and for anyone who prefers not to climb. Taller bar stools almost always need a footrest to be comfortable for more than a few minutes.
- Matching a table. The same seat-to-surface gap applies to counter-height and bar-height tables. Our dining table size guide covers footprints and clearances.
How much space between bar stools?
Nathan James’s spacing guide (How Many Bar Stools Do You Need?) gives these rules:
- Allow at least 24 inches of counter length per stool, and 26 to 28 inches for comfort.
- Those numbers assume armless stools 16 to 18 inches wide. Stools with arms can measure 20 to 24 inches wide and need 26 to 30 inches each.
- Measure only the usable seating edge with proper overhang, not decorative end panels.
- Leave at least 36 inches of walkway behind the stools, and 42 to 48 inches for high traffic or entertaining.
Our own calculation for a common 96 inch island edge: at 24 inches per stool you can fit 4 armless stools. At 28 inches per stool (a comfortable spacing for stools with arms) you fit 3, with a few inches to spare. When in doubt, the guide says to choose comfort over one more seat.
This is where seat width matters. The Rove Concepts Wishbone Counter Stool is 21.7 inches wide because its backrest wraps into armrests, so plan for the wider spacing. The Norman Counter Stool is 17.3 inches wide and fits the standard spacing rule.
Swivel vs stationary stools
There is no sizing rule here, just tradeoffs:
- Swivel seats let you turn toward the room or the person next to you without dragging the stool. They help at islands that face a living area, and in tight spots where pulling a stool back is awkward.
- Stationary seats tend to look cleaner, stay lined up, and suit wood-frame designs like the Wishbone and Elbow. Kids also have less to spin.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use bar stools at a kitchen island?
Only if the island is bar height, about 40 to 42 inches. Most islands are standard 36 inch counter height, where a bar stool seat leaves too little leg room.
What height bar stool do I need for a 36 inch counter?
A counter stool with a seat of roughly 24 to 26 inches. To be precise, measure to the underside of the counter and subtract 9 to 12 inches.
How much space between bar stools do I need?
At least 24 inches of counter per armless stool, 26 to 28 inches for comfort, and 26 to 30 inches for stools with arms, according to the Nathan James spacing guide. Leave at least 36 inches of walkway behind.
Are swivel or stationary stools better?
Neither wins across the board. Swivel helps with conversation and getting on and off; stationary looks tidier and stays in line.
