The best outdoor rug for most patios, decks and porches is a synthetic one, usually polypropylene, in a size large enough that at least the front legs of your seating sit on it. Synthetic fibers shrug off rain, resist mildew and clean with a hose, while natural fibers like jute and sisal look softer but hold water. This outdoor rug guide covers materials, sizing for patio layouts, how to keep a rug in place and how to clean it, with the outdoor rugs we carry from 6 x 9 to 9 x 18 feet.
Outdoor rug materials compared
Home Depot’s guide to types of outdoor rugs splits the market into two groups. Most outdoor rugs are synthetic: acrylic, nylon, polyester or polypropylene. Because those fibers are non-porous, Home Depot says they resist stains, fading, mildew and mold and are much easier to clean. Natural fiber rugs (bamboo, jute, hemp, seagrass or sisal) are often chosen for their look and feel, but they deteriorate faster outside, fade in long sun exposure and hold on to water, so mildew or mold can occur.
| Material | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Polypropylene | Open patios, decks, pool areas, camping | Can feel thinner underfoot than wool or jute |
| Polyester, nylon, acrylic | Covered or partly covered patios | Check the label for UV and fade resistance |
| Jute, sisal, seagrass | Fully covered porches with little rain | Holds water, can mildew, fades in sun |
| Bamboo | Covered spaces, layering | Home Depot says bamboo can last up to 10 years, but it is still a natural fiber |
Home Depot also recommends looking for rugs labeled solution-dyed, meaning the fibers were dyed before weaving, which helps them hold color longer in the sun.
Why a polypropylene outdoor rug is the default
Every outdoor rug we currently list is a polypropylene outdoor rug from Benzara. The listings describe them as polypropylene with a protective coating to resist fading and sun damage, waterproof, reversible, foldable into an included carry bag, with reinforced edges and corner loop straps for staking. That combination suits a patio that sees rain, a deck near a pool, an RV awning or a picnic spot. If you want a plush, wool like rug, keep it on a covered porch and accept that it will need more care.
Outdoor rug size for patio layouts
Home Depot’s advice is to measure the area first and, if the rug goes under an outdoor sofa or table, buy one large enough that all of the furniture legs rest on it, or at least the two front legs. The same floor border logic we use indoors in our area rug size guide works outside. Use these as starting points:
- Bistro set or two chairs: 5 x 8 or 6 x 9 feet anchors a small table and two chairs on a balcony.
- Conversation set with a loveseat and two chairs: 8 x 10 feet usually lets the front legs of every piece sit on the rug.
- Outdoor sectional or sofa with chairs: 9 x 12 feet, or larger if the layout is wide.
- Dining table: size the rug so chairs stay on it when pulled out. Our outdoor dining table size guide lists how much room each chair needs.
- Long decks, RV awnings and picnics: 9 x 18 feet covers a long, narrow area in one piece.
Before you buy, mark the rug outline with painter’s tape or chalk and walk the space. Make sure the rug does not run under a door swing, a grill or a fire feature. Keep rugs well clear of a grill, fire pit or patio heater; follow the clearance in that appliance’s manual.

Keeping an outdoor rug in place
Light rugs move in the wind. A 6 x 9 foot rug at about 3.5 pounds can lift at the corners on a breezy deck. A few ways to keep it flat:
- Use the corner loops with stakes on grass or sand, as the Benzara listings describe.
- Set furniture legs on the edges so the weight holds it down.
- On a hard patio, an outdoor rated rug pad or double sided outdoor rug tape can help; test tape on a hidden spot of a wood or composite deck first.
- Roll the rug up before a storm rather than letting it act like a sail.
How to clean an outdoor rug
Home Depot notes that many synthetic outdoor rugs can be washed with dish soap and sprayed with a hose, vacuumed or spot cleaned, then laid out in the sun to dry. Natural fiber rugs need gentler spot treatment, such as baking soda and water left overnight, and spills should be blotted fast. With either type, shake or sweep the rug often so grit does not grind into the fibers, and always follow the maker’s care instructions.
Two habits help the surface underneath as well. After heavy rain, lift a corner and let the rug and the deck or patio dry. At the end of the season, wash the rug, dry it fully, fold it into its bag and store it somewhere dry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best material for an outdoor rug?
For open, rain exposed spaces, a synthetic like polypropylene is the safest choice because it resists mildew and cleans with a hose. Natural fibers work best on a fully covered porch.
What size outdoor rug for a patio?
Choose a size that lets at least the front legs of your seating sit on the rug. An 8 x 10 foot rug suits many conversation sets, while a sectional often needs 9 x 12 feet or more.
Can an outdoor rug stay outside all year?
Synthetic rugs are built for weather, but sun, snow and standing water still wear them down. Cleaning and storing the rug over winter extends its life.
Can you put an outdoor rug on a wood deck?
Yes. Choose a rug that drains and dries quickly, and lift it after rain so the boards underneath can dry out.
