This thing does WORK! I bought this so I could make homemade donuts inside. I despise the smell of hot oil but have been deeply invested in these maple bars. My range is not connected to a vent outside so it's useless. My house is 100 years old and obviously hasn't been updated for such things. This litrle range is great. A little on the loud side but not anything that isn't manageable. It really does help keep the oil smell minimal and from lingering. I use it while cooking all the time now. Truly impressed.

Great removal of coffee roasting smoke. First off, I was sold a returned item. The original shipment labels were still on the box and the return label. I was charged for a new item and should have received a new not returned item. This is the reason for a 3-star review. It works as intended. I purchased to eliminate the smoke when roasting coffee beans. The roaster smoke usually sets off the smoke alarm, but with this exhaust fan it has eliminated that problem. It's compact and portable as advertised. I recommend this fan.

Empava portable vent. It's very effective at sucking the moisture from cooking but not as good at pulling oil from the air. Also the filters break down quickly. It definitely keeps the kitchen cooler when cooking.

Kills smoky odors well. It's a big gadget but it works very well at inhaling smoke and odors in my open concept kitchen. I don't like the lingering smell of certain foods and this does a great job at killing those odors! I like it!

Effective for filtering what's on a single burner. This fan is reasonably quiet and does a good job of catching the smoke or steam from a burner is placed near it. It is quieter than our conventional range hood, and because it can be placed near the source, more effective. And the filter worked well in my trials, catching both grease and particulate matter. So why only four stars? Well, there were two things that I viewed as a bit problematic. First, the metal grille and the filter (btw, it comes with a good number or replacements for both) are held into place by a ring that latches into place with four tabs, and it's not easy to disengage the tabs in order to change the filter. Second, the ring does not seat firmly enough to actually hold the filter in place: as you'll see in one of the picture I provided, the filter was pulled out of the frame by the force of the fan's suction. That said, it still functioned well even with the filter not held in the way it was intended. I also have a minor gripe: the instructions that were provided are not at all clear. Potential purchasers should be aware that this will only pull the vapor from ONE pot or pan. It is not strong enough to tend to more than that. There is a grease catcher that is not terribly easy to get in and out, but after a couple hours' worth of use, nothing was in it, so I'm guessing you'd only need to check it after deep frying with boiling oil.

Multi use portable downdraft. This product is useful for numerous situations. It would be great for extra ventilation in a residential kitchen, outside grilling area, fire pit as well as for smelly craft/ art projects. It comes with several replacement filters and they are so easy to install. For grease or other solvent type materials that are pulled through, there is a handy access door to clean the machine. It is sturdy and should withstand normal conditions indoors or out. There is a noticeable increase between the 3 speeds however, the noise is minimal.

Moves air away fast. I set this fan up on the counter next to my stove while boiling some food on the stovetop. It pulled the hot air and steam away very quickly and across the room. It was easy to set up and turn on. It comes with 15 cotton filters, so it should be a while before I need replacements. It seemed very well made and comes with a long cord.

Smoke be gone! This is perfect! My parents have an old house and don't have ventilation in the kitchen, and she uses an old greasy pot for frying food, and her kitchen smokes up and the whole house smells like grease, I set this up right by the stove, over the pot and it instantly started sucking the smoke up, even on the lower settings! It came with several filters. The outer ring is magnetic, so it's easy to take a part and clean, and it also has a grease trap that slides out.

Sleek design and features. This fan has a sleek design and does move a good amount of air. I also like the inside funnel design and removable drip tray. I bought this thinking it was a regular desktop fan so the air coming out the back confused me at first, but totally makes sense now. I think it will work well for cooking with oily food on the stove. The two negatives I would say is that it is a bit loud especially on the highest setting. Although if using while cooking that may not matter. I also think the design on how to hold the cotton pads could either fit better or have better instructions as you can see in the pic the best I could do would be to get it fit wrinkled

Powerful, clear smokes as cooking! I'm been waiting to get a table top vent hood to try if it helps. This one when you turns it on, it sounds very powerful! I keep it at 1st or 2nd setting. Oh yeah it definitely does get all the smock away faster than built-in counter flat Jenair, which let the smoke becomes cloud standing overhead..

It sucks. I bought this for my apartment. After setting off my smoke detector twice, I realized I had no over the stove exhaust fan. So I got this bad boy. I no longer have to jump out if my shorts to a blaring alarm! Works like a charm. Doesn't creaye any residual smoke. Just sucks....literally. Love it!

It's OK. I live in an apartment in which the smoke detectors are ridiculously sensitive. It's a safe bet that any time I'm trying to sear anything on the stove top or in the oven that I will set off the smoke alarm. I was hoping that this fan would help reduce the likelihood of that happening, but when I used it while cooking on a profusely smoking cast-iron pan, I ended up using a second fan to direct the smoke out the window because this fan didn't seem to be managing the smoke very well. The good news is that with both of the fans running, I avoided tripping the smoke alarm. The bad news is, I don't think that this fan would have done it on it's own. Even on high.

Everybody fan out. I have an apartment with downdraft ventilation in the kitchen and I just need more sometimes. Or, I may have to burn something down inside on a cold night and just can't have that lingering odor in the house. Either way, this is an effective option. It does have to be close to the source, but it can move some air without making a whole lot of noise. It slowly revs up, so perhaps you just get used to the noise; either way, it is better than the vent in the apartment. And the filters seem to do something. I notice it most with oil smoke.

Seems decent. We've had a downdraft exhaust that gave up the ghost recently. They're stupid expensive, so I opted to leave it and try this in the interum. It works very okay. The real challenge with anything not overhead is that it has to be really close. That's a challenge, moving the plastic fan close enough to really get all the smoke but far enough away it doesn't melt. That said, it does a decent job of catching the smoke. The suction is meh at a distance but is really good the closer you bring it to the pan. If you have a big pan on a smaller burner and can get right up to it, it gets everything. The noise is about what you'd expect. Kitchen loud. You can still have a conversation. It ramps up slowly, rather than revving right to speed, and I think that keeps it from getting too loud. There are extra filters and oil catchers and everything comes apart easily for cleaning after a few months of use. If you've got an overhead vent, pass on this. If you have a downdraft or nothing, then this is definitely an improvement. The cord could be longer or retractable. That's really my only functional complaint. Fortunately, I have a plug on the island, but outlets are rare near a stovetop, so consider that.

I swear, I invented something like this in my mind years ago, and thought “wouldn't it be great?”, and here it is; a solution to smoky kitchens in houses not well suited to range hoods. It works on the same philosophy as a range hood, but without exhaust, it simply filters the air. It's not HEPA-level filtration, but in my first endeavor using it, it improved the air quality while cooking. It's a simple concept; a small fan with a grease screen that gently leans over your pan to suction the smoke through the mesh and a loose-woven cotton filter prior to blowing the air out the other side. The grease screen is rimmed with a drainage channel that will drip any built-up oil into an internal drip cup that can be removed after cooking. We use a HEPA filter with a particulate monitor that will regularly go off the charts when I try to cook something like a steak on the stovetop. In my first experiment, I made two batches of turkey bacon in a pan with beef tallow. The first batch using the fan had particulates that were somewhat lower than the second batch, though the second batch started with the burned remnant of the first in the pan, so this may not have been an objective test. Strong little fan. Pretty strong fan for what it is. When I first tried it I had the back facing me and it like I was standing in front of a regular fan. I tried it with boiling water and did a pretty noticeable job. Didn't use it very long and had a few drops of water in the reservoir. Would work inside a camper with kitchenette or with something other than a stove. Light weight and easy to move around.

Powerful Venting Fan. This Portagle Countertop Ductless Range Hood works great. It has a very strong fan with three speeds. I set it on the lowest speed and it did a great job catching the steam from a pot of boiling water. I then turned it up to the highest speed and it was very powerful. It runs relatively quiet even on the highest speed. I think it will be a great addition to our outdoor kitchen in helping to pull the smoke away from the grill. It is a little larger than I expected. about the diameter of a large roll of paper towels and slightly taller. I guess the size is what makes it an efficient fan for catching the vapors while cooking. I would highly recommend this for anyone with an outdoor kitchen, RV or to simply use along with the range hood in their home.

Cuts smoke/odors in half. Doesnt completely eliminate smoke and odors but cuts it at least in half. My fire alarm would be activated whenever using my frying pan and that no longer happens with this. It's not too noisy but quieter than regular range hoods

Works for moisture, not for odors. I use this fan with a gas cooktop and oven. It does an okay job at reducing steam and cooking vapors, but it doesn't capture odors at all. The included cotton filters trap moisture, but not smell. · The instructions don't mention where to buy replacements, which will be problematic when it's time to order more. I may try cutting my own charcoal filter material to fit, since that could help with odor control. · Build quality is average: the fan is top-heavy, and the plastic housing gets warm if it's too close to the burners. On the plus side, it has a long six-foot cord, so placement is flexible. The oil absorbing cotton disc's are included and are easy to change/replace. A grease diversion port on the filter assembly drains grease into the oil cup section at the base of the unit. The control panel is simple touch operation with 3 speed settings and the on/off button. Very quiet even on high speed and it cleans the smoke/oil from the cooking area. AMAZING!! I live in a house that's over 100 years old. Yes, it's beautiful, has hard wood floors and a wrap around porch. And something seems to need repairing every other week. But one of the drawbacks is there's no vent over the kitchen stove and no really easy way to put one in. There is a space above the stove for a microwave, so I got one of those that's supposed to vent even without a vent in the house, but it was so weak it wasn't even worth it. This little thing is MAGIC! Seriously. I just tried it while frying a pan of bacon and it just sucked up all the smoke, the fire alarm didn't go off, and the whole house didn't smell like bacon (not that THAT'S a bad thing). It has a pretty small footprint, so can just sit by my stove all the time. Definitely great for apartments or dorms or other places that aren't vented.

Practical fix for areas with no vent hood. The countertop ductless range filter does work to replace the traditional range hood over the stove. The power is good enough to pull the smoke/vapors away from the cook surface effectively. It was a bit bulkier than I had hoped, taking much more countertop space than expected. I is effective and unimposing in large kitchens, I am sure, but my kitchen counter space is limited and it was hard to find room. Its design is sleek and attractive. It is very quiet as well. The filters not only draw the smoke and vapors out of the air, but they also reduced the amount of cooking smells. It is a great tool when grilling or frying fish. I grilled some steaks and air-fried some blooming onions and tater tots, as well as used it next to my toaster oven for some bratwursts and it worked effectively with each appliance.

Well thought out, powerful, large. This review is for the Portable Range Hood for Cooking, 3-Speed Desktop Kitchen Exhaust Fan from Empava. I have purchased other fans meant to pull away fumes, steam, and smoke, and have always been disappointed with them. So when I opened the box for this fan I was surprised. First because of the size, it's large - the fan housing is 6 1/2" across, and the whole thing is over a foot tall. That's not a criticism, just unexpected given my previous experience with other fans of this sort. The second surprise is the level of quality. It feels sturdy, with a tight fit in all the connections. Even the "drip drawer" fits tight enough that it won't fall out as you move the fan. The magnets holding the grease filter in are strong enough that the face snaps into place firmly and doesn't rattle or come loose without a tug. The fan itself is very quiet compared to a normal cabinet mounted range hood. You won't have to speak louder or turn the music up when this is on. The electronic controls are sensitive enough that a light touch is all it needs to turn on, off, or change speed. And the speed of the fan! I have cooling fans that don't put out as much air as this does. When you use it, make sure there is nothing behind it that will blow away. It's that powerful. I can think of a variety of uses but the biggest one, for us, will be when grilling outside to pull away the smoke and fumes and a little heat away from the grillmaster. This unit is compact and very stable. The unit is operated with plug and adapter that is removable from the main unit for ease of transport and cleaning, but the unit is not battery operated. The exhaust fan has 3 speeds. The highest speed is very strong and the lower 2 speeds will also be used from time to time. The unit is reasonably quiet. I do not have a decibel meter and the listing says that the highest speed is 63dB which is already pretty quiet! So the other two speeds are even quieter. The filtration systems seems very thorough. It has several layers of washable grease screen filters held in place by a cleaverly-designed magnetic escutcheon plate. It also comes with several packages of cotton oil-absorbant pads that you can add to the layers of screen filters for additional filtration when exhausting particularly greasy smoke. There is an oil cup to capture oil/grease that drips off the components which is a good design element, lest it drip into the body of the unit or gum up the motor. The verbiage on the package unfortunately does a disservice to the product. Decent for low to medium heat use. This portable range hood is a nice option for someone like me that doesn't necessarily do a lot of cooking. My current range ‘hood' is simply a fan that blows air around & does nothing to mitigate fumes and oil splatter. I cook pretty simple meals and don't like the leftover smells from cooking, so this countertop range hood is a good option for me until I update my kitchen range. I cooked scallion pancakes that use a bit of oil in the pan and feel like this fan did a decent job of keeping oil from lingering in the air. I don't think this fan is equipped for a job that requires high heat cooking. Today I did a cold sear on a medium-sized steak. I ran the fan on high once the steak started to sizzle, but in the 10 or so minutes for the steak to cook, I still had a good amount of fumes in the house. You can see in the video that the fan is certainly pulling air from the cooktop surface, but the high heat required for the beginning of this cold sear overpowered the fan's capability. I would say if you're not too serious about cooking, this range hood could be a help in the kitchen. If you're in a rental property that doesn't have a good ventilation option (or you're just not ready to reno a kitchen with a new hood) this would help lessen the oil splatter and fumes. Removes Odor when Frying. This indoor exhaust fan works well from removing odor when frying indoors. I used this when i fried eggroll and it decreased the odor that lingers after when im done cooking. Since most of the smell is from the oil, however it does not completely remove the odor. I tried this for other cooking methods, like while making stew or soups and such, but it doesnt really work for those type of cooking. Doesnt seem like the filter is able to clean those aroma out. It is fairly easy to use. plug it in to a close by outlet and turn it on. Noise level it acceptable but its definitely noticeable. This is not compact and does not fold when done, so be sure to have some room for storage. Also, there is only 13 oil filters included, and not sure where and how to acquire more. Seeing that they are made of fiber material, it doesn't seem like they are reusable and are consumable. Also, the filter tends to get sucked in so be sure they are in there correct. All in all, i see the benefit of this tool, but with somebody with limited space, i find that this is too bulky for a single use tool.

Well made. This is perfect for our on the counter fryer. I now can put it on any counter to cook without having to place it near the stove and vent hood. I just start using my grill and turn this on next to it. It cleans the air quickly and efficiently. It makes very little noise and is just the right size. I am pleased with the quality of this product and would definitely recommend it.

High filtration in a smaller size. This countertop filtration fan pulls the fumes/grease out quick. It came with 15 filters that are easily changeable in the magnetic suction port. The description notes low noise but two of us found it was above average for a typical fan, even the lowest setting which provides very good air flow. It is a good size and worked well when I was cooking burgers on the stove. Prefer it way over grease splattering everywhere.

Excellent countertop range hood. This countertop hood works really well. Much better than expected, in fact. It requires very minimal assembly - just put the filter materials in place and then plug it in. It isn't terribly loud for what it does. I keep it on the counter next to my stove - on the side opposite from the burner I'm using, and it significantly reduces odor and smoke in my kitchen when I sear fatty ribeyes on the stovetop. Usually, I get smoked out - even with the windows open. With this, I don't have to open a window at all if I don't want to. Some smell remains, and a bit of smoke, but very little compared to without it. It has a small footprint, which is critical for me in my small kitchen. I've lived in my house for 4 years without a range hood as it would cost close to $1000 for one to be installed. This is a fabulously economical solution, that actually works! Highly recommended - this has literally been a game-changer for me!

Not great but good. I was skeptical to use this with my gas range, but it's a decent alternative to a range hood if you need to cover a small space. It has 3 speeds and the lowest speed works okay. I like the multiple layers (4 total) of filtration. Seems to vent okay but I could still smell some odors outside of the cooking area. Relatively no installation required and the size is reasonable.

It has three speeds and is perfect for tiny kitchens that don't have an exhaust fan, for use in a dorm room, and is perfect in a camper kitchen when cooking inside! It comes with a power adapter so it does require an outlet nearby and uses 24 watts which is something to consider when camping unless you have shore power. The fan is relatively quiet, no jet engine to shout over when in use! I have been using it in my camping trailer to keep cooking smells from lingering, it does a decent job.

Works really well! I really like this portable Range hood. I use it for outdoor use with my BBQ, since it's in a covered area that will fill with smoke if you sear a steak or cook 80/20 burgers. It makes an acceptable amount of noise, much better than a full range hood (but it's also much smaller). IT appears to be well made of durable material, but time will tell I suppose. overall, good, low cost item for what I need it for.

Very good for small apartment kitchen. Our vent hoods do not ventilate to the outside so when we make steak or chicken, it smells out our apartment for days. This has saved our apartment. Super portable and has draw for cleaning oils that it has sucked up. I love that there are 3 levels to switch from to help with whatever you are cooking. Would recommend for odor and smoke removal.

This little unit is powerful! This unit surprised me! I'll start by saying with its three different speeds, even on the highest speed it's quieter than my range hood. I like making my own soap and the fumes can be overwhelming, and my range hood is not enough to handle it. This took care of the issue quite nicely. It's super easy to use. And although normally I would think that $88 is pricey for this type of unit, after seeing how well it works… I find the price to be reasonable.

Solution for smoky kitchens. This portable exahust fan is the coolest invention. We took our old fan down and haven't put the new one up yet. I ordered this to use in the camper but tried it out at home and it was great. I didn't even know these existed. I'm not a great cook and burn things a lot so I'm sure we'll get a lot of use out of this. It's about the size of a blender, so you'll need some counter space. I took a chance on this Empava portable range hood after getting tired of my smoke detector going off every time I seared a steak, and it's been a complete turning point for me. The sleek silver-grey design actually looks quite nice on my countertop without the industrial appearance of some competitors. I'm genuinely impressed by how powerful the fan is, even on the middle setting - it effectively captures smoke and cooking odors from my stovetop. By the way, you do need to position it fairly close to your cooking surface for optimal performance. The three-speed settings are actually useful; I use the lowest for everyday cooking and crank it up to high when using my cast iron for high-heat cooking. I particularly like the included replacement filters, which should last me several months. The noise level is comparable to my microwave's fan - noticeable but not conversation-stopping, especially on the lower settings. My only real complaint mirrors - the power cord could definitely be longer to provide more placement flexibility. For anyone in a rental, small space, or RV without proper ventilation, this portable hood offers tremendous value and has made a noticeable difference in keeping cooking odors and smoke under control.

Handles Cooking Smoke Well, Easy to Clean. I got this portable range hood because sometimes when I'm cooking things like steaks indoors or doing a hot pot, the regular vent fan doesn't quite cut it. This desktop unit seemed like a good solution for extra fume extraction right where I need it. It's a silver-grey color and sits on the counter. The build quality feels decent. It's mostly plastic but seems sturdy enough. It came with a detachable oil cup, which is great for catching grease, and a bunch of cotton filters (13 of them). Setting it up is just plugging it in and placing it near the cooking action. Replacing filters and cleaning the oil cup is simple.   It has three fan speeds. It does a surprisingly good job of sucking up smoke and cooking smells, especially on the higher settings. You can definitely notice the difference. It's not silent, especially on high, but the noise isn't too bad considering how much air it's moving.   It's easy to move around and store when not needed. I'm giving it four stars. It works well for its intended purpose, is easy to clean, and the portability is key. I docked one star mainly because it can be a bit loud on the highest speed. But for dealing with occasional heavy cooking smoke or smells right at the source, it's a really handy gadget.

Great portable range hood. This Empava portable range hood is really cool looking, and pulls steam right in. We tossed a tissue from about 5 inches, and it flew right in to the front. It is perfect for steam and rising grease, especially since we have an unfortunate pot rack about our stove. It is pretty quiet too, which is nice. It pulls the grease, but not completely, and works better on the steam. I think it also gets rid of a lot of the cooking odor. It is large, so you'll either have it on the counter, or need a really tall place to store it.

Fabulous idea. I don't have a built in fan in my kitchen so this works really well for us! It's small and easy to store when not in use. It works! Really minimizes cooking smells.

This thing is Huge! This fan is huge! It does a nice job with clearing the air out quickly and it's very easy to move around as needed. I just didn't realize quite how large it was.

Works surprisingly well! It's always a treat when you receive an item that actually works well, and this portable hood range fan does not disappoint. The stove in my mountain cabin is on a kitchen island with no range hood. Whenever we cook bacon or fish, the cabin smells like our meal for days. When I first saw this item, I didn't have extremely high expectations, but I am very pleased with the performance. It's super easy to put together and setup. It came with 9 washable filters, which I imagine they will last quite a while. The fan has 3 speed settings and is quiet considering the amount of air it moves, even on the highest setting. I only tested it with breakfast sausage so far, and it worked really well to keep the smoke and grease odor out of the air. You could see it sucking-in the smoke and blowing out clear air. At $110, this one comes-in a little cheaper than comparable items, and I see no reason to buy the more expensive alternatives since this one works great. Recommended!
