Queen vs full bed comes down to two numbers: a full mattress is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, and a queen is 60 by 80, according to the Sleep Foundation’s full vs queen guide. That is 6 inches more width and 5 more inches of length for the queen. Those inches decide whether two adults sleep well, whether tall feet hang off the end, and whether your room keeps a walkway. Below: sizes, room fit, who each suits, and real frames we sell in both sizes.
Full vs queen bed size at a glance
The table below uses the standard mattress sizes from the Sleep Foundation. The per person width is our own math (mattress width divided by two), so treat it as a rough guide.
| Full (double) | Queen | |
|---|---|---|
| Mattress size | 54 in wide x 75 in long | 60 in wide x 80 in long |
| Surface area | 4,050 sq in | 4,800 sq in |
| Width per person if two share (our math) | 27 in | 30 in |
| Sleep Foundation says it suits | Single adults, small bedrooms | Couples, people over 6 feet, sharing with kids or pets |
| Typical frame footprint | Check the listing (see our examples below) | About 62 to 65 in x 82 to 85 in, per the Sleep Foundation |
The Sleep Foundation notes a full has about 15 percent less surface area than a queen. It also says a full generally costs about $100 to $300 less than the same mattress model in queen.
Is a full bed big enough for two?
For most adult couples, a full is tight. Split down the middle, a 54 inch mattress gives each person 27 inches, versus 30 inches each on a queen. The Sleep Foundation’s full size bed page describes a full as a good fit for one person, one person with a small pet, an adult with a child, or two children sharing. Its queen size bed page says most couples will find a queen more accommodating, though some couples find a full is enough.
A full can work for two as an occasional guest bed, or when the room cannot hold anything wider. If you share a bed every night or a pet joins you, the queen is the safer pick.
Height and sleep position
Length matters as much as width. At 75 inches, a full leaves a 6 foot (72 inch) sleeper only 3 inches of spare length, and the Sleep Foundation points out the pillow takes up much of that. A queen adds 5 inches. Back and stomach sleepers lie fully extended, so they feel the difference most. If anyone in the bed is over 6 feet tall, choose the queen.
Queen vs full for a small bedroom
The Sleep Foundation recommends leaving about 24 inches of space on each side of the bed and at the foot so you can walk around it and make it. Its full size page suggests a room of about 120 square feet to fit a full bed plus other bedroom furniture.
Using that 24 inch rule, here is our estimate of the minimum clear floor space with the headboard against a wall. Real frames add a few inches, so we included two we sell.
| Bed | Footprint | Space needed with 24 in clearance (our estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Full mattress only | 54 x 75 in | 102 x 99 in (about 8.5 x 8.3 ft) |
| Queen mattress only | 60 x 80 in | 108 x 104 in (9 x 8.7 ft) |
| Benzara Wemy Full frame | 57.25 W x 78.5 L in | About 105 x 103 in |
| Benzara Wemy Queen frame | 62.5 W x 84.75 L in | About 111 x 109 in |
Practical tips for small rooms:
- Tape the frame’s footprint (not the mattress size) on the floor before you buy, as the Sleep Foundation suggests.
- Plan nightstands too. If you need two, our guide to nightstand height helps you pick ones that sit level with the mattress top, and dresser dimensions covers the clearance a dresser needs to open its drawers.
Real queen and full beds we sell
The fairest comparison is the same bed in both sizes. All dimensions and prices below come from our product pages as of this writing; prices can change.
Benzara Wemy panel bed, full and queen
The Wemy Full Size Bed is $276.18 and measures 78.5 L x 57.25 W x 51.25 H inches. The Wemy Queen Size Bed is $295.46 at 84.75 L x 62.5 W x 51.25 H inches. Both are MDF and particleboard with a tall panel headboard and slats included. So the queen costs $19.28 more here and takes about 5 more inches of width and 6 more inches of length than the full frame.
Benzara Alli platform bed, full
The Alli Full Size Platform Bed ($331.83) is a low profile matte black frame, 77.56 L x 56.22 W x 15.31 H inches, that the listing says needs no box spring. A low frame with no tall headboard keeps a small room feeling open. A queen version is listed on our site too, but Benzara’s own site showed it as unavailable when we checked, so call before ordering it.
Benzara Lilian upholstered bed, full
For a guest room or a teen’s room, the Lilian Full Size Bed in gray velvet ($229.27) has a tufted headboard with three inches of height adjustment and a 12 slat base, per the listing. It measures 78.9 L x 58.3 W inches.
Rove Concepts Ophelia bed, full or queen
If you want a fully upholstered designer frame, the Rove Concepts Ophelia Bed is offered in Full, Queen, King and Cal King on both our site and Rove’s. On our site, the Modern Felt Alesund finish is $2,350 in Full and $2,483.33 in Queen. The listing gives 65.5 in wide x 93.3 in deep without naming the size, so call us for the exact footprint before you measure. For more Rove options, see our Rove Concepts beds compared guide.
Price honesty: where to buy
We checked each maker’s own store. The Benzara beds above showed the same prices on benzara.com as on our site. Our freight shipping is free on orders of $999 or more and a $200 flat rate below that, so a single Benzara bed from us carries that $200 fee. Compare the checkout total on both sites before you choose.
For the Ophelia, Rove’s own site showed the Queen in Modern Felt Alesund at $2,350 on sale when we checked, which is less than our $2,483.33. Rove’s store policy lists $159 flat rate standard shipping on orders up to $5,000, and returns follow its returns and refunds policy. Rove members usually pay less buying from Rove: the member price shown for that queen was $1,410. We are an authorized Rove Concepts dealer and ship free over $999, but we will not claim to be cheaper. For our terms, see our return and refund policy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a queen vs full bed?
A full mattress is 54 x 75 inches and a queen is 60 x 80 inches, so the queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer. Frames add a few inches to both.
Is a full bed big enough for two adults?
It can be, but it is snug: about 27 inches each. The Sleep Foundation says most couples will be more comfortable on a queen.
Should I choose a queen vs full for a small bedroom?
Measure first. With about 24 inches of clearance on both sides and the foot, a full mattress needs roughly 102 x 99 inches of floor and a queen about 108 x 104 inches (our estimate from Sleep Foundation guidance). If your room is under that, or narrow, a full or a low platform frame is the better fit.
Can you help me confirm a frame’s size before I order?
Yes. Call us at 866-777-2590, Monday to Friday, 9AM to 6PM PST, and we will confirm the dimensions, availability and shipping cost for the bed you are considering.
